Plastic water bottles still dumped in Ooty: Official
Udhagamandalam: Despite strict enforcement by government agencies, plastic water and soft drink bottles find their way into the town.
Ooty municipal health officer Dr G Sreedharan said, “During tourist season, the garbage collection increases by 30-50 per cent. We find a lot of used plastic water bottles dumped on the roadsides. However, not many banned carry bags are found.
But plastic garbage bags are found during the collection.”
He said, “We find cases of plastic water bottles in vehicles, including buses from Kerala and Karnataka. We seize them immediately. But we are not able to check every vehicle entering Ooty.”
According to him, even used plastic water and soft drink bottles are found in tourist buses and vans during checking.
“We collect around 55-60 tonnes of garbage every day during the tourist season,” Sreedharan said.
Of the 45 garbage collection vehicles, at least 25 vehicles are operated daily for collection.
