FEMA and the Maine Floodplain Management program are unveiling new flood insurance rate maps.
These maps are created by FEMA to represent flood risk. They set standards for how Mainers can develop property, and they determine where federally backed insurance is available.
"If the homeowner has a federally backed mortgage or some type of financing and they’re being newly mapped in the flood hazard area, their lender will likely require flood insurance coverage," said Sue Baker, the National Flood Insurance Program state coordinator.
Baker added that homeowners insurance does not cover flooding damage from a flood that started outside the property.
She said this is the first time since the 1980s or 1990s that FEMA has done an all-new coastal analysis for many communities in Cumberland County.
The new flood insurance rate maps for Cumberland County will take effect on June 20, and new maps for York County will take effect on July 17. Open house events will offer residents an opportunity to review the maps with representatives from FEMA and state officials.
A drop-in event is scheduled for Cumberland County residents on Monday, May 13, at the South Portland City Hall from 3-7 p.m. For Mainers in York County, an open house will be held Monday, June 3, at the York County Emergency Management Agency on Jordan Springs Road in Alfred, Maine.
Town and city halls will have copies of the map available for viewing. Questions can be directed to the Maine Floodplain Management Program.
