Fuck I was gonna say that, but you took it. I had to say Mother Love Bone good one man that is like my fucking favorite album in the top five of all time.
I think it's worth elaborating for younger music fans. This album came out during the days of grunge and the band is a "supergroup" comprised of Mike McCready (of Pearl Jam), Layne Staley (of Alice in Chains), Barrett Martin (of Screaming Trees), and John Baker Saunders (of The Walkabouts).
Temple of the Dog is a similar supergroup that only released one self-titled album. The band consisted of Chris Cornell (of Soundgarden), Stone Gossard (of Pearl Jam), Jeff Ament (of Pearl Jam), and Matt Cameron (who would play with both Soundgarden & Pearl Jam), and.... Eddie Vedder (of Pearl Jam).... on backing vocals!
I think a lot or most people know about the latter project, but as I said, I understand that there are younger redditors around who might just be getting into some of this stuff retroactively, so there are some interesting details.
Blind Faith
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far down to find this.
That's because most of us who remember it well are getting old.
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Go to the top with this one
Absolutely ethereal
RIP Jeff
The guitar tech for Jeff Buckley became an artist himself. Check out Ours, you can hear the influence.
HE ONLY HAS ONE ALBUM??
man i was really getting into his stuff
Yeah. He drowned while swimming before he finished his second album.
Creepy how his Dad who also died young, Tim Buckley, wrote Song to the Siren.. I know it’s supposed to be a metaphor for love but I can’t help but think how a watery death also relates to the lyrics.
why is it always the good ones. i swear
I remember finding his CD in the University Library collection, listening to it on my Discman and being amazed by it. Some time later, he performed in Auckland and I thought about going, but I must have had something else on or been broke, so I thought maybe next time. Chose wrong that time, unlike when I made sure to catch Nirvana perform the one time they came to NZ.
First album to ever make me cry. I would give anything to get him back.
Oh shit, never saw that album as a one and done, but I guess so. Wow! So good.
There have been some posthumous releases of unreleased tracks, but that's the only album he released in life.
If anybody in this thread loves Grace, but hasn't checked out Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk, it's well worth your time. Outstanding album, as rough as it is.
The posthumous album, Sketches for my Sweetheart the Drunk, is great. They’re mostly unfinished songs, but some real gems in there nonetheless. “Vancouver” never fails to give me goosebumps
Give Up by The Postal Service
They took their own advice to heart.
underrated comment
And seeing them live with Death Cab this year was amazing!
I just saw the show in orlando. Was amazing. Jenny Lewis was incredible
Does Ben sing for both sets???
Yes, and he even changes outfits between sets (at least he did when I saw them). Dave Depper also played guitar for both.
That album is so solid and the two artists never recorded live together! It was all done through, ahem, the postal service.
Really only one album?
I didn’t believe it either and just looked it up and sure enough they only have one album. Give up in 2003. Just a few singles after that.
They basically launched 00’s eta indie and that garden state album was really good. I’m shocked.
Estimated time of arrival indie?
Yeah but Death Cab For Cutie was the singer's new band and they've released loads since then.
Death Cab was around first. The Postal Service was basically a side project.
Derek and the Dominoes
LAAAAAAAYYLAAAA
Fav band of all time.
I've always counted their 1973 In Concert album as their best. The studio album production sounds a bit thin compared with their best live shows.
But I've always been partial to concert albums from that era. If I had to pick only one album from some favorite bands, it'd be The Doors Absolutely Live, Allman Brothers Fillmore East, Grateful Dead Europe '72, Hendrix Band of Gypsys, Stones Ya-Ya's, and In Concert 1973 for Clapton's best work.
Came here for this
Operation ivy
She, she, she, she’s a BOMBSHELL!!!
Loveage-Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By
Patton is god.
God that album is incredible, such a vibe
Still in full rotation here.
This is it.
Them Crooked Vultures
We need to push them all for another album!!
I know Dave has said he wants to. Hell, let's get another Probot album while we're at it!
Came here to say this!
You know, just an average rock band, consisting of John Paul Jones (of Led Zeppelin), Dave Grohl (of Nirvana/Foo Fighters), and Josh Homme (of Queens of the Stone Age). No big deal. Also, I just learned that Liam Lynch did the artwork and graphic design for the album, but "Whatever."
Came here to say this one.
The United States Of America - The United States Of America (1968)
Just listened to the album again yesterday, it's unreal how creative and interesting it is to hear
Temple Of The Dog
Listened to Say Hello to Heaven and cranked it waayyyyyy up today
Hunger Strike is one of the best songs ever made.
This is the answer - played it over and over
Agree!
This
Young Marble Giants
Definitely.
Oysterhead
He used to be the owner of the world, but now he’s just another man who used to be the owner of the world.
When all else has been done and said...
The La’s - The La’s (1990)
Kinda controversial as it was released without the band’s consent.
Team Sleep: Self Titled
This is cheating a bit, but The Zombies first all-original album was Oracle and Odyssey released in 1967. They had an album before that but it was a lot of covers. Then they didn't release another album until 1991. So I consider Oracle and Odyssey to be their only true original album. And it's incredible.
Edit: it's actually called Odessey and Oracle whoops
Nice. Colin Blumstone's solo stuff is insane too.
TIL they really only had 1 album.
And about a month ago I learned that Rob Zombie was NOT a member of the band.
The Zombies are an awesome band. Time of the Season and She’s Not There often make it into my rotation when playing random music videos on YouTube. Bus Stop by the Hollies and anything Roy Orbison are some more goldies I play a lot.
I LOVE the Zombies. They still play shows, I’ve seen them a few times and they’re still really good. +10 to O&O.
Sex Pistols
This should be the top answer. They aren’t my personal favorite, but it’s hard to name a one-album band that impacted music more.
