Cypress, Texas
Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication, Multi-platform Journalism

They say if you follow your passion, you’ll never work a day in your life. In essence, doing what you love never feels like work, and that’s how graduating Bearkat Hunter King felt about his time at Sam Houston State University.

Majoring in mass communication with a focus in multi-platform journalism, King was always excited to learn more about the industry. It may sound gimmicky, but that truly is the magic of Sam Houston State. Life as a Bearkat gives you the opportunity to learn what you're passionate about and make connections with those who share your passion, as well.

“It's a big campus, but it also feels like a small community because I think SHSU does a really good job of giving you sense of family,” King said. “I'm really going to miss that, the close connections and the friends that I've made.”

King has always been passionate, both in school and his career pursuit. Growing up, he loved watching his dad work as a sports broadcaster, out on the field calling games, doing something different from the typically nine to five. King also loved watching cable news when he was younger, much to the amusement of his siblings. Nevertheless, King knew he’d excel in broadcast news, and years later, it all came together for him.

While at Sam Houston, King has kept himself busy. In addition to doing work for Channel 7 Bearkat Student Media and Integrated Marketing Communications, King was a member of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA), interviewing athletes and coaches and broadcasting games, which got him comfortable being on air.

Now with his college career coming to an end, King is ready to take on the world, literally. He has wasted no time in interviewing for jobs all over the country, with the hopes of one day working for a national station in markets he never would have dreamed of if it weren't for the opportunities provided by SHSU.

“No matter what you want to do here, you're going to learn a lot,” King said. “I've never had this much fun while also learning and getting ready for a career before, and I don't know if I'll ever do it again or have that opportunity again. Going back to the friends that I've made here and the communities that I've been a part of, it's going to be one of the best times in your entire life. A lot could have gone wrong if I had gone to another university. I'm so happy that I ended up at Sam Houston State.”
