Summary

  • Sabotage Studios is working on DLC for Sea of Stars and a new game to meet demand for more content.
  • The DLC for Sea of Stars is in progress, with a possible reveal trailer in the future.
  • The new game from Sabotage Studios could continue in the same universe or be completely fresh.

In a recent interview, the creative director behind Sea of Stars confirmed that DLC for the game is currently in the works, as well as a completely new game. The second release from developer Sabotage Studios following 2018's The Messenger, the turn-based fantasy title was an undeniable indie darling of last year. Set thousands of years prior within the same universe, Sea of Stars follows a group of heroes as they face off against creatures called Dwellers before they can destroy the world.

Widely considered one of the most standout games of 2023, the public adoration of the title and requests for more content haven't been lost on the development team. In a recent Screen Rant interview about Sea of Stars, the game's creative director and president of Sabotage Studios Thierry Boulanger revealed that fans will have more to look forward to from the team in the future. Check out the full quote below:

Thierry Boulanger: Well, we're always monitoring demand and what people - as you know, and especially working with iam8bit, is we just want to make it a good version that people genuinely want to have and to own as a product because it means something to them. We're not just trying to ship plastic. So we are paying attention to what people would like to see, and we'll be there if there's overwhelming demand.

And we are working on DLC, actually. We have yet to sort of show the theme, maybe we're cooking some reveal trailer soon. But yeah, DLC is absolutely coming. It's important for us, because seeing the reactions and the attachment to the characters and everything, and there's a bit more of a story to tell there. So that's what we're working on right now along with prototyping our next game, but that will probably be a couple of years before we're ready to reveal anything.

The Future Of Sea Of Stars

Where The Game's Upcoming DLC Could Go

A market place with two characters passing through in Sea of Stars.

Reactions to Sea of Stars from critics and fans alike since its release last summer have been overwhelmingly positive, praising its combat, retro style, and storyline, so it's not that surprising that the development team has decided to pursue a DLC release. What the future release might entail, however, is still up in the air. Previously, when the developer released the Picnic Panic DLC for The Messenger, it was set in an alternate timeline but with the same main character, and an expansion to Sea of Stars could take the form of something similar.

However, The Messenger was a distinctly different genre than Sea of Stars. Its platforming nature made expanding upon the game mostly consist of adding a handful of new levels and bosses, but the intricacies of the newer title might in turn make for a more-detailed DLC. There's arguably more lore and combat mechanics that could be explored in an additional release than with its predecessor, perhaps expanding the world within the same timeline.

What A Brand-New Game Could Look Like

A Return To The Same World Or Something New?

One of the largest questions surrounding a third title from Sabotage Studios is whether it will continue within the established universe or delve into something completely new. While they're both set in the same world, it wasn't completely necessary to play The Messenger before Sea of Stars, so it's possible the next game could only be loosely tied to previous ones. Unfortunately, regardless of the studio's plans, it will likely be awhile before fans get any official news about Sea of Stars DLC and the developer's next venture.

Sea of Stars is available now for PlayStation consoles, Xbox consoles, Nintendo Switch, and PC. DLC for the game currently has no release date.
