All the teams for Round 8 in the Smithy’s VFL.

Star Essendon defender Jordan Ridley will make his long-awaited return from a quad injury through the VFL when the Bombers chase their second win of the season against North Melbourne in their 2024 return to Windy Hill on Sunday.

Ridley tore his quad in the pre-season and again when he was due to return a month ago, but is finally right to take the field and get some miles in the legs before playing AFL in what will be his first VFL appearance since 2019.

He comes into the team alongside Sam Weideman, while the Kangaroos rung the changes at AFL level, with Hugh Greenwood, Will Phillips, Riley Hardeman and Blake Drury dropping back, while Zane Duursma, Eddie Ford, Curtis Taylor, Miller Bergman and AFL debutant Wil Dawson head the other way.

St Kilda star Brad Crouch will make his return from a knee injury in Sandringham’s huge clash with Richmond at Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Sunday.

Crouch carried a knee problem when he played for the Zebras in Round 1 and aggravated the issue, ruling him out for the past two months, and his return will be a big boost for a team that will take on a different look to the one that suffered a heartbreaking loss to Box Hill at Wonthaggi last week.

Ruckman Tom Campbell, forwards Jack Hayes, Matt Allison and Olli Hotton and youngsters Hugo Garcia and Angus Hastie have all been named for Sandringham, with Anthony Caminiti, Zak Jones, Mattaes Phillipou, Cooper Sharman, Paddy Dow and Lance Collard called up to the AFL.

Injury-riddled Richmond continues to box above its weight, but losing captain Lachie Street to a season-ending knee injury last week could be the tipping point as the Tigers call on three debutants under the Channel 7 spotlight.

Sam Frangalas, the son of ex-Tiger Gary, is a big-bodied mid-forward, Josh Pollocks is a hybrid defender from Balwyn and Point Cook Centrals rebounding defender Luke Haddara will become the third graduate of the club’s Bachar Houli Academy to make his VFL debut.

SANFL recruit Cooper Dahms will play his first game for Footscray as it aims to keep its undefeated start to the season going against a chastened GWS at Blacktown International Sports Park on Saturday.

Dahms, who turns 25 on Sunday, has played 34 games for Central District and lined up 17 times for Nightcliff over summer, playing in the NTFL Grand Final loss to St Mary’s and representing the league in its pre-season win over Essendon.

He comes in alongside father-son Josh Kellett for his first game of the year, with Caleb Daniel back in the AFL team and Ryan Gardner injured.

James Peatling has been dropped from the Giants’ AFL team and Marc Sheather is back from suspension, with Xavier O’Halloran and Jacob Wehr stepping up and Leek Aleer in concussion protocols.

A rejuvenated Northern Bullants have regained three stars but lost another one as they aim to record a second straight win in front of their loyal fans against Southport at Genis Steel Oval on Saturday.

Co-captain Liam Mackie returns from suspension, in-form midfielder Alex Jacobs is back from a hamstring and key defender Will Wallace suits up after missing the win over Collingwood with a bruised sternum, but Will Elliott won’t get another chance to impress before the mid-season draft due to syndesmosis, while youngsters Jack Chubb and Rook Barry are injured.

Jack Sexton returns from injury to play his first game since Round 2 for the Sharks as Jay Lockhart gets a rest, while Cairns key forward Lachie Rhook will make his debut in the absence of Wylie Buzza, who has a calf issue.

Geelong Falcons ruckman Joe Pike has received an ideal 19th birthday present after being selected to make his VFL debut for Geelong against Coburg at Piranha Park with Toby Conway and Shannon Neale having played AFL.

The Lions regain small forward Kyle Weightman from suspension but lose experienced defender Harry Nolan to concussion.

Carlton’s injury crisis will hit the VFL team hard as it heads to Williamstown, with Hudson O’Keeffe to miss up to three months with a serious hamstring injury, David Cuningham doing a calf and Sam Durdin being concussed in last week’s loss to Casey Demons, while AFL injuries have seen Jack Carroll, Orazio Fantasia and Caleb Marchbank promoted.

Fitzroy VAFA young gun Dane Harvey has been added to the Blues’ squad to make his debut against a Seagulls team that made one change with Josh Browne back from injury for Ben Andrews.

It could be a case of last man standing for Casey Demons and Brisbane Lions as injury and player management bites at both clubs.

The Demons have lost six players for Melbourne’s trip to Perth, including star forwards Ben Brown and Shane McAdam and key defender Adam Tomlinson, while Marty Hore is out for up to six weeks with a calf injury.

The seven replacements have played just 12 matches between them this season, nine of those by Tom Freeman and Mitch Szybkowski, with Berwick’s Kobe Shipp to play his first game.

The Lions have called on retired GWS goalkicker Daniel Lloyd off their AFL coaching staff given the breadth of their injury list, with Deven Robertson returning from a shoulder injury and Sherwood’s Lions Academy member Tristen Meekin picked for a debut as four players go up to the AFL and three more are injured including Ben Thomas, who has been a revelation in attack.

Collingwood has been boosted by the return of star forward Ben Crocker and midfielder Noah Long, as well as AFL-listed youngsters Ed Allan and Tew Jiath, for its must-win clash with Werribee at Victoria Park on Saturday.

The Magpies’ season is teetering after being the only team so far this season to lose to all three of Coburg, Northern Bullants and Essendon and they need to grab a big scalp to stay in touch with the top 10.

Ben Silvagni has also been included for his first game of the season and Mansfield star Harry Mahoney, 21, has been plucked out of the Goulburn Valley league’s representative squad to make his VFL debut, with Aiden Begg possibly to miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury and Nathan Kreuger promoted to the AFL.

The Tigers regain star centre half-forward Nick Hayes from his nasty concussion against GWS to play his 199th State league game, with Corey Preston back from suspension and Williamstown recruit Zac Banch to play his first game for the club, but Jesse Clark will miss with concussion.

All matches in the 2024 Smithy’s VFL and VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website, AFL Live Official App and VFL App.

Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will broadcast select matches live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7plus nationally. This week’s broadcast game will be Sandringham vs Richmond.
