I hope this helps someone (romeo and juliet)

Revision Resources

Nurse - comedic character who is a motherly figure to Juliet. Shes loving and truthful Makes the reader think the marriage might really work out. Comedy juxtaposes the theme of tradgedy to make audience think it will be alright which reinforces the idea that fate cannot be avoided

Mercutio - gets queen mab speech which is the most romantic speech in the play, he is the one who sacraficed his life by getting murdered as a result of his loyalty. Facilitates the marriage incident by encouraging romeo to go to the ball. Death is part of the climax. His death makes romeo want revenge which makes him kill tybalt which makes the rest of the dark events happen, he changes the genre of the book to revenge tradgedy.

Tybalt - epitome of misplaced family loyalty, how it has negatively impacted verona and society, his death is the tipping point and point of greatest tension. Hes violent and volatile (short tempered).

Paris - an opposite to romeo, he knows nothing about the woman hes come to love and pushes mr capulet to marry him even though mr capulet says shes young and to wait a bit. Romeo knows all about juliet. We don’t want paris to marry juliet, paris is marrying for money and romeo is marrying socially and even with all of romeos problems we know hes better. Shakespeare criticises marrying for money

Capulets - element of control, lady capulet is volatile and absent in juliets childhood, nurse is opposite to capulet and was far more of a maternal figure than the actual parent. We want the young lovers to escape this relationship of over control. The end of act 5 where theres reunion and still a slight element of competition that is a dark insinuation that they havent learned their lesson even though they lost their children. We arent left with conflict but grieving parents at a gravesight, we have some sympathy as the whole romantic saga was in the end a tradgedy

Friar - no matter what he does, he gets it wrong and the message isnt delivered. You cant outstep fate because there are too many factors. Opposite of capulets. Hes a metaphor for the church. Church was very respectable with romeo and juliet following his plans no matter how risky

Prince - he represents inevitability, warns the family bad things will happen with his speech and then everything goes wrong. He foreshadows and is at the end to tie it all up. Voice of the audience
