Colin Farrell discusses 'Sugar' plot twist, working with fellow Oscar nominees — and scene-stealing dog

New episodes of the mystery drama, co-starring Kirby, Amy Ryan and James Cromwell, are released Fridays on Apple TV+ through May 17.

INDIANAPOLIS — Who is John Sugar?

Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee Colin Farrell ("The Banshees of Inisherin," "In Bruges") stars as the titular private detective who is hired to investigate the disappearance of a Hollywood producer's beloved granddaughter.

"It uses noir tropes, voiceover, lonely detective living in a hotel room who gets immersed in this case that gets under his skin and begins to reveal not only the kind of dark shadows that the world he inhabits but also his own backstory and his own inner turmoil," Farrell said.

The show's sixth episode revealed a major twist that had audiences buzzing — but I'm not going to spoil it for you!

"I thought it was moving. It was interesting. I didn't know what it was going to lead to or how it was going to inform the story and the evolution of the character," Farrell said of the twist. "I think more of that would be resolved if there was a second season, that we would get to explore John Sugar's origin story possibly a little bit more."

Also starring in "Sugar" are rising star Kirby ("Cruella," "The Good Place") and Oscar nominees Amy Ryan ("Gone Baby Gone," "The Office") and James Cromwell ("Babe," "L.A. Confidential").

"There was a moment where there was going to be some kind of romance between (Farrell and Ryan's characters), but the two of us just decided it would seem more true and deeply consequential and less superficial and more original — we just liked leaning into the idea of the friendship of the two characters," Farrell said.

Another scene-stealer is Farrell's four-legged co-star named Wiley, who Sugar takes in off the streets while trying to solve his case.

"That dog was magic, man," Farrell said. "He was just a really bright, really kind, beautiful-looking animal. I loved having him in the car. Some of my favorite moments in the last 25 years working as an actor were driving around Los Angeles in that convertible Spider with Wiley by my side."
