It cleared (he phased back into the real world) when he fulfilled the crazy chick's demand for his son's blood. She was either serving God (by sentencing Tom Jane to a Trial of Abraham) or serving whatever god runs the Mist World (Dagon or some figure like that, probably - God of the Unconscious IINM - they were all in "Jonah's Whale" while inside the Mist).
The mother remained faithful (not ruled by fear of the unknown/the unconscious) so she wasn't subject to the trials and lessons that come while in the underworld/beyond the threshold.
The book/novella actually leaves it more ambiguous so you could basically decide it went either way. I can't remember if the suicide ending was King's original vision for it or they just took the most bleak interpretation.

Military horror is a slept on genre and I am tired of there being no movies than a few good ones
The problem is that most writers, directors etc doesn't have any experience or even the most basic understanding of what the military is and how they work so they're just not able to write a script about it. Almost every single representation of the armed forces in movies and tv are downright laughably stupid because they don't even bother doing the most basic research. Probably because they're mostly anti military.

Likely they wouldn't need to. Given the length of the legs and the shortness of the facial tentacles, it's likely a giraffe or elephant analog that feeds on things that are high up; the leaves of alien trees or fungus that grows on top of rocky outcroppings. Plus it just ignored the people around it when we see it when every other monster was extremely aggressively hostile.
That's probably the alien equivalent of a whale shark, giant and scary looking but actually a docile filter feeder
