'Firefly,' 'GomBurZa' lead Gawad Urian nominations


'Firefly,' 'GomBurZa' lead Gawad Urian nominations

Firefly” and “GomBurZa” are leading this year's 47th Gawad Urian nominations.

According to the announcement by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, “Firefly,” the tear-jerking magical realism film about TonTon (Euwenn Mikaell Aleta), a boy who searches for the mythical island described in his mother Elay's (Alessandra De Rossi) stories, is nominated for 10 awards.

The GMA Pictures and GMA Public Affairs film is nominated for nods such as Best Picture, Best Director for Zig Dulay, and Best Screenplay for Angeli G. Atienza.

Eleven-year-old Euwenn is also nominated for Best Actor. The Kapuso child star already won several awards for his work in “Firefly,” including Best Child Actor at the Metro Manila Film Festival Gabi ng Parangal.

Alessandra and Epy Quizon are nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Actor, respectively. Alessandra previously won Best Supporting Actress at the Manila International Film Festival in Hollywood, California in February.

Meanwhile, “GomBurZa” has been nominated for 12 Gawad Urian awards.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Pepe Diokno, “GomBurZa” follows the lives of the three Filipino martyr priests Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora who were executed during the latter years of the Spanish colonial era in the Philippines.

Diokno is nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay with co-writer Rodolfo C. Vera.

The movie is top-billed by Cedric Juan, who won the MMFF 2023 Best Actor trophy. He is likewise nominated for Best Actor at Gawad Urian.

Dante Rivero, Piolo Pascual, and Enchong Dee are nominated for Best Supporting Actor for their roles in the historical film.

The 47th Gawad Urian will be held on June 8, with the venue yet to be announced.
