Chile: Unionized truckers begin nationwide indefinite strike May 13

Unionized truckers begin nationwide indefinite strike in Chile on May 13. Associated blockades reported.

Warning

Cargo truck drivers affiliated with the Northern Force Transport Workers' Guild Confederation (Confederacion Gremial de Transportistas Fuerza del Norte) have began an indefinite strike on May 13. As part of the labor action, the group has been blocking parts of Route 5 near Linares in Maule Region; reports also suggest traffic disruptions are ongoing in the Antofagasta Region. Several demonstrations were also announced across urban centers on May 13, including outside Santiago's La Moneda Palace from 10:00 and in Iquique's Plaza Prat from 12:00. Participants are making several demands, including improvements to security and road safety.

Any roadblocks associated with the strike will likely cause significant traffic disruptions in affected areas. Police are likely to deploy to any demonstrations, and clashes cannot be ruled out, especially if authorities attempt to forcibly disperse protesters and reopen roads.

Allow for additional transport time. Seek alternatives to Route 5 or consider delaying transport until the protests are over. Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
