vandalism, trespassing and destruction of property. just a day earlier, police had called the takeover of the vacant building a crime beyond the police barriers, people chanted to free palestine, a recent graduate of uc berkeley says he's all for the protests but was not fully on board with this occupation. i mixed opinions about this, but i'm proposing, you know, i think they're doing a good, good work here, michael. the investments mission they have going at one point, protesters did get close with officers trying to move the perimeter back, but it did not escalate from there. that was dan thorn reporting. >> remember there were the protesters at sproul hall that ended earlier this week. there were there for about 3 weeks. the university says that these protesters that are near people's park and the other ones that they're not connected >> let's talk more about what's happening to the north because that's been the new development this morning. after days of controversy,

sonoma state university president michael lead now has decided to retire. reyna harvey is live with more on that. >> had our ian james. so this all comes after csu administrators put him on administrative leave for insubordination after he made a deal with protesters without checking with his bosses, the chancellor of the csu system says president mike lee agreement was made without the appropriate approvals. the agreement included an academic boycott, israeli universities. some students in sonoma support the former president's agreement and think his punishment was unfair. >> i support the president and on the agreements against genocide. kind of crazy. how a statement about lake ending genocide is like. crazy, crazy thing that has to put someone on leave. how student activist group said the agreement late out in a three-page letter. >> was a win. but it's clearly controversial at is seen as anti-semitic by some.

strike clause of their contracts with you see and says a dangerous and far reaching president that social political and cultural issues no matter how valid that are not labor related can support a labor strike and quote. >> well, a multi-vehicle crash killed at least one person this morning. the chp says it happened a little after midnight on eastbound 5.80, out near grand avenue. on-ramp. we're off ramp one of the cars overturned. police haven't released any details about who exactly died. meanwhile, the chp and hayward is looking for the driver who hit and killed a man. officers say they found that man's body wednesday night near interstate 80 right there on the willing boulevard west of embers way. chp says the driver took off and they haven't been able to come up with a suspect description just yet or the type of vehicle involved. but as soon as they do release that will let you now. >> it's 10, 0, and oakland's mayor is talking to kron 4 touting progress that she says she's made to fight crime. know the numbers seem to bear

that out. she also gives us an update now on how they're dealing with homelessness. kron four's. catherine heenan has the story. >> people are accepting housing. the mayor talked about the fact that in the latest count, homelessness grew by 9% in oakland. those numbers released just this week, but at least the rate is slowing down. 9% does not sound as drastic when you consider the city's homeless population grew. 47% from 2017 to 2019. and 24% between 2019 and and so this 9% increase is actually a significant success shows that we are, you know, closing off on some of these >> homelessness issues. of course, there's still so much to be done. i we can walk out the street still see encampments. and so that's our job is never done until everyone is brought inside in our streets. a in clear of encampments. >> she says oakland is working on making modular housing

permanent and that federal housing help is coming in forms that are easier to when i advocate at thd federal level for a voucher ys, we're advocating for playspace voucher so that it's easier for people to redo bc the section 8 vouchers that they don't have to go find it. >> a land where that would take it that it's attached to housing units. as for the improved crime numbers recently released one number not being celebrated is the fact that residential robbery is up 110%. >> that translates to 42 home robberies so far this year compared to 20 in the same period last year. >> you know, i know that it's like it's it sounds scary. when you say 110% increase. but mind you, you know, you come from already a very small amount of numbers for you today. and and, you know, and the you know, tick in certain states certain categories. we're hyper focus on those categories. catherine heenan kron, 4 news.

>> it's 10, 10 and happening now. highway one in big sur has reopened to traffic. that's still going to some lane closures and taking turns. that's going to be slow because you can see what happened. the highway collapsed part of it there in late march because we had such a wet winter and they've got to really rebuild that permanently. but for now, at least they got a good enough to get by. this happened just a half mile north of the famous bixby bridge. so it's been affecting a lot of locals and a lot of tourists. crews are going to have the area signaled so that there's traffic control to allow one way alternating traffic in both directions. and they're working on the permanent solution, which right now is in the design phase and they hope to finish an install everything and have it done in spring of 2025. and another detour for you tonight. starting tonight, highway 37 is going to be closed this weekend between sonoma and solano counties because caltrans is doing more of this paving work they've got this project. they've been working

company doesn't believe the tion is being used right now for any fraud or identity theft. but there's no way for them to be sure they're offering a complimentary identity theft protection membership to all impacted speaking of there's a website that helps people find out if you're in for my animation has been compromised. that's right. in fact, we've got a rich demuro walking us through exactly how that works. >> another day, another data breach. here's a letter att recently sent to customers saying their information was released on the dark web. so when we say things like it saying you cannot be removed from the 18 t data breach because tens of thousands of people have it now because it's published only is that easily downloadable planning. troy hunt runs a website called have i been it's a way to check if your personal information and passwords have been exposed. as of tonight is 767,000 bridges in including leaks from facebook. adobe,

linkedin, dropbox and more. problem is when your password is exposed in a breach, hackers try to use it to log into other websites. mask order might add. it's time really, really volumes and suddenly because used to pass cross someone's now into social media council, whatever else it might be, we've few freeze as pensions, which is why it's so important to use a password manager to create strong, unique passwords for every site. so you never get to remember 100 plus pass puts so that you make. so what most people do is to i like my dog and i went to university and this year. so they fall is not possible use everyone. there is a password alternative called pass keys where your phone approves loggins. but this can be confusing, especially sinking across various devices. and we're trying sort of dragged people from something very familiar. nice views through to something that's much more secure china hunt believes it's just a matter of time before the next breach that i think we're judging companies

unfinished or likely unnecessary work. police say the men used at least 2 different names for their company. one was statewide roofing and siding. sometimes they said their company was called roofing and masonry. the first report of this that it was a scam happened in november of last year. and the most recent case, somebody said they were scammed recently as may 8th. all 3 have been arrested and now they're in the san mateo county jail. and we now know the identity of the man who was killed while he was riding e-bike in hayward. 22 year-old say rahm dollop, holly lived in hayward was riding an e-bike on may 8th near mission boulevard when he was struck by a vehicle. he was taken to the hospital, but he ended up dying of his injuries just 2 days later, a dollop ali was a graduate student from india, and he was for suing a master's degree in computer science at cal state east bay. he is the 4th person to be killed in this year.

that that councilmember put forward failed to get out of a subcommittee. >> he's by the summer of 2025. that san francisco hopes to take delivery of 2 giant pandas from china. >> to help make that happen on thursday, the mayor's office says the government audit and oversight committee to authorize a waiver allowing the mayor as well as 5 city departments to start raising 25 million dollars in donations. we want to make sure that not a single dollar. general fun going to this proposal. >> and that's why we've come to you to ensure that only philanthropy will go to support. the panda exhibit at all. the costs associated with it. there's a lot at this. >> but was san francisco's department of children, youth and their families facing a 25 million dollar budget cut supervisor and mayoral candidate cautious a ii question whether this should be at the top of the mayor's to do list. this is about prioritizing our future. this is about prioritizing our children over pandas. and if

we can rally to fund a home for pandas, we certainly can rally to raise money for essential programs that impact every single corner of this city. the mayor's office said they would support waivers for both endeavors. committee members supervisor catherine stefani agreed insisting putting one project against another is not productive. >> i don't think it's impossible to seek private philanthropic dollars for pandas as well as programs supported by dc wyeth and our children. and i just think that if we're going to get into these mutually exclusive wars about we can't we can only do this and not do this. i just don't believe that we should limit ourselves like that. stephanie, in the mayor's office favorite moving the resolution on to the full board of supervisors. >> for a vote at its june 4th meeting. we need to start raising money right away. i don't think it's ready to be forwarded to the to the full board. but fellow committee members supervisors, dean preston and connie chan voted instead to bring the resolution back to their committee with changes among

other things they want to list of potential donors and interested parties. they want to consider narrowing the number of city departments to can raise funds and they want to explore whether the money raised can also go towards deferred maintenance at the zoo. well, some might see this as an unnecessary bamboo barrier. others see it as a committee doing its due diligence. however, you see it. it means panda fundraising efforts won't begin at least until mid-june, if not later. dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> it's 32 and a 31 year-old threat man is arrested for assaulting his girlfriend last month. and san leandro. it happened on april 19th haas avenue where the police found her with injuries to her face. and then she told them that her boyfriend had assaulted her and sexually assaulted her as well. and he was arrested on wednesday by undercover

detectives in fremont actually. and they say he confessed during an interview and now he is being charged. >> well, a man who was hit and killed by suspected drunk driver in fremont earlier this month has now been identified. he was identified by investigators as 26 year-old to new low. she knew of oakland he was hit and killed on may 3rd on fremont boulevard. the driver who hit him. he's from sunnyvale, apparently crashed into a traffic pole and was ultimately arrested for dui. the victim's family has put together a gofundme campaign to cover funeral costs. as you can see in this photo, he leaves behind his pregnant wife and 3 children. this is the first traffic fatality in fremont this year. in the east bay. one person has died after a triple shooting enrichment. it happened on may 11th along pullman avenue, right near carlson boulevard. that's where richmond police found 3 people who'd been shot. one of them died at the scene. no word on the condition of the others. police are looking for that suspect this morning.

>> time now 34 north bay community is shaken up because they just learned that police found a woman's body at her home in rio vista when they want to do a welfare check. investigators believe her son is the person who killed her. going to shatter has the story. >> there was tension between the mom and the son. he was living here for 2 months. he was emotionally. stable, worried neighbors on birch ridge drive in the trilogy. retirement community called rio vista. police said senior in a while. >> after their 78 year-old neighbor haven't been seen for several days. there was a conflict. something was boiling there and went, you know, of oiled over cops got the call requesting to check on the elderly woman yesterday evening. they were met at the door by the woman's 57 year-old son when additional officers arrived. he tried to stop them from.

>> checking the residence to check the welfare of that's when altercation ensued to try to move to physically block them from getting to doorway. officers conducted this sweep of residents founder deceiving. >> she was a very nice lady. rhea vista. police ended up arresting the sun on suspicion of homicide. he's identified as jeffrey 8. nick seen here on the megan's law website. he is a convicted offender. in my experience as a veteran law enforcement officer. >> normal people do not kill their mothers. it's a very violent crime. it's one of the, you know, so one of the worst murders you can do the killing of of a parent or child. there are many unanswered questions as to why and how this happened. but chief john maser says the investigation is active and under way. >> he commended the victims, neighbors for getting involved

in good shape. and the company says these flares are a central part of the system to safely maintain and manage the excess combustible gases while burning them off officiant. lee and they say effectively mrc is hoping to minimize or even prevent any flaring during this process. and they do point out that they have spent 70 million dollars to upgrade their equipment. >> new trader joe's is going to be opening today in hayes valley. that means they've got now their 7th location in san francisco and the district supervisor there. dean preston says that they're thrilled that this space that was vacant before is going to be, you know, i mean, before it was like kind of in disrepair, encampments, vandalism, al-aqsa stuff over the years, so will be vibrant and occupied again. trader joe's, i love that there's a lot of trader joe's around california, but you notice in many areas actually they don't have still don't know. and they're so great. yeah. >> all right. time now is 10 38. and ahead of what's expected to be by the tsa, the

busiest summer travel season ever. we do have some special needs students out on the peninsula who took a field trip to oakland airport. yeah, they went there to kind get down how this all goes. and they had a lot of fun to kron four's. philippe djegal has more. >> a simulated flight to hawaii for students from over bay middle school in san carlos. thursday starts like it does for all of us who fly the tsa security screening at san francisco bay oakland international airport. ask questions before boarding southwest airlines captain sean welsh explains with the kids with special needs should expect on reassuring them. they are in good hands. don't everyone? the risk is that i do is drive to work. the safest thing i do is actually perform my job at work when ready for that. yet. >> safety data on board. flight attendants lay out the itinerary and demonstrate safety protocols in case of an emergency. this tie into what the students are learning in the classroom, not taking a

classifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug. our dc correspondent trevor shirley has more on this shift in policy. >> the change would recognize marijuana as a drug with less potential for abuse than other substances. it's currently classified with if finalized. >> roundup marijuana will no longer hold the higher level classification. it currently hold over fentanyl. >> and meth. the proposed rule recognizes marijuana for medicinal and research purposes and acknowledges its lower potential for abuse. the change, though, does not legalize marijuana for recreational use. the administration is taking a major step toward reclassifying marijuana from a schedule. to schedule drug under federal law. that would put marijuana in the same category as things like ketamine and some anabolic steroids. but some opponents argue marijuana is still not a safe substance. what they're

doing is saying marijuana has lower potential for abuse at a time when the science is telling us the potency of this drug is unlike it has ever been before. the change is long been discussed. but the white house made the announcement as it also works to shore up support in key voting blocs. the reality is while white black and brown people use marijuana at similar rates, black and brown people have been arrested, prosecuted and convicted at disproportionately high rates. the white house argues the policy shift will have a positive impact on minority communities. the president's actions today further his commitment to reverse longstanding injustices and to right historic wrongs. the drug enforcement agency will now have a public comment period for this with formal approval expected to happen at some point later this year. >> reporting in washington, i'm trevor shirley. >> well, the transportation security administration says it is getting ready for the busy summer travel season ever beginning with the upcoming
