Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard has made it possible for the next ‘Call of Duty’ to be released on the Xbox Game Pass subscription service on the day of its launch. In practice, this means that the new title in the popular ‘franchise’ could become available to members of the service without them having to buy it.
Until now, this hypothesis was still being evaluated by Microsoft, but according to The Wall Street Journal, the technology giant has decided to move forward with this strategy and plans to officially announce it on 9 June - the date on which the Xbox Showcase presentation will take place.
If the news is confirmed, it means that Microsoft is willing to give up the revenue that would be generated by the launch of a new ‘Call of Duty’ through direct purchase. The Redmond-based technology company seems to believe that new Xbox Game Pass subscriptions can help to compensate for lower sales on Xbox consoles and on PCs.
Microsoft may also decide to increase the price of the monthly Xbox Game Pass subscription, with the website The Verge stating that this issue has been discussed within Microsoft.
