A Look Back at The Stats from Euro 2020

We are just weeks away from Euro 2024 in Germany in what is set to be an exciting summer of football. Before we get to this year’s European Championship, here is a look back at the last edition of the tournament, and the notable stats from the competition.

Italy Became dual Winners

With victory over England in the final at Wembley, Italy became one of only four nations to win the European Championship more than once. Their previous success was in 1968. It was also their fourth appearance in the final, as they were runners-up in 2000 and 2012.

The defending champions are 14/1 in the Paddy Power football betting to make it a hat-trick of wins later this year. They will be bidding to become the first country since Spain in 2012 to defend the trophy.

The Euro 2024 odds are headed by England and France this year, as they are 7/2 and 4/1 respectively. Italy have had a mixed bag of results since their Euro 2020 triumph. They failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, so this will be their first appearance at the finals of a major tournament since their victory at Wembley.

Patrik Schick and Cristiano Ronaldo Topped the Goals Charts

Czech Republic’s Patrick Schick and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo were the highest goalscorers at Euro 2020, as both players finished with five goals each. The latter scored in each of his country’s group games, with goals coming against France, Germany and Hungary.

Ronaldo won the top goalscorer award ahead of Schick as he also had one assist to his name. The latter did walk away with a prize himself, as his strike against Scotland was awarded the Goal of the Tournament.

There was a total of 142 goals scored at Euro 2020, which meant there was an average of 2.78 per game. Italy and Spain finished with the most goals, finding the back of the net 17 times.  

Jordan Pickford Shone for England in Goal

One of the stars of Euro 2020 for the runners-up England was Jordan Pickford. He picked up five clean sheets, the most of any goalkeeper at the event. Unfortunately for the Three Lions, he was unable to help his side win the penalty shootout in the final, as documented in the BBC match report.

Pickford did not concede a goal in the group stage. The Everton shot-stopper went 480 minutes before conceding his goal of the tournament. It was Denmark who ended his run in the semi-final at Wembley.

The England ‘keeper was helped by Kyle Walker and Harry Maguire in his defence. Those two players were named in the Team of the Tournament.

Pandev Makes History for North Macedonia

Veteran striker Goran Pandev scored North Macedonia’s first-ever goal at a major tournament in their opening group game in a 3-1 defeat against Austria. At the age of 38 at the time, he became the second-oldest goalscorer in the competition’s history.

Pandev retired from international football after Euro 2021, bringing an end to an incredible career that saw him feature 122 times for North Macedonia.

Euro 2024 takes place between the 14th of June and 14 of July, with the final set to be held in Berlin.
