Public television unions in the Belgian region of Flanders (VTR) today cut the transmission during the performance of Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest and projected a protest message against the war in Gaza.

"This is a union action. We condemn the human rights violations by the state of Israel. Also, the state of Israel is destroying the freedom of the press. That is why we interrupt the picture for a moment", read the message projected on the screen over a black background.

The text was accompanied by the protest slogans #CeaseFireNow and #StopGenocideNow.

This is the same message that they projected in the semi-final on Thursday, during the minutes that Israel's performance lasted, in this year's competition that is taking place in Malmö (Sweden), by the singer Eden Golan with the song "Hurricane".

This decision joins the pro-Palestinian protests that took place today in Malmö against Israel's participation in Eurovision, and the boos that occurred, although also mixed with applause, during the Hebrew singer's performance in the contest.

The 68th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest is being marked by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which has been going on for decades, but intensified after an attack by the Palestinian group Hamas in Israel, on October 7, which caused almost 1,200 deaths, with the country led by Benjamin Netanyahu responding with an offensive that caused more than 34 thousand deaths in the Gaza Strip, according to both sides.

Since it became known that Israel would participate in the contest, represented by Eden Golan, several appeals were made by European political representatives and artists to the EBU so that the country's participation in the contest would be vetoed.

Israel, which is one of the 25 countries that is disputing the Eurovision final today, was the first non-European country to be able to participate in the music contest, in 1973, and has won four times, including with the transgender singer Dana International, in 1998.
