Neil Lennon slams Celtic fans after Rangers captain James Tavernier pelted by missiles

Neil Lennon has hit out at Celtic fans responsible for throwing missiles at Rangers captain James Tavernier.

The right-back appeared to be targeted by the home support, of course the only fans inside the ground, during today's derby. The Hoops won the game 2-1 to spark celebrations at the final whistle as they are now basically home and hosed and just waiting for the fat lady to sing.

But a minority within the crowd marred the occasion by launching missiles towards the Englishman. Tavernier was seen picking an item up and handing it to referee Willie Collum, with Lennon reckoning it was a "marijuana grinder" that had been chucked towards him.

And the Celts legend and former manager was heavily critical of the supporters responsible.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: "It is totally wrong. It's unnecessary, it's awful. Player safety on the football field is paramount for me. To see scenes like this angers me. He doesn't deserve it, he is a footballer and is just doing his job. Just leave him and let him get on with it.

"I hear it's a marijuana grinder, so maybe Kenny (Miller, on commentary) threw it down. I don't want to make light of it. What happens if he gets hit by that?"

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd added: "Your team is winning. You can shout abuse - we have all had it and we all get it. To start throwing things, it's like come on. Someone is going to get a sore one."
