New Phone - "This device belongs to your organization" reset loop

Hi All,

I bought a refurbished Pixel 5 off of Ebay's "Ebay Refurbished" store.

Upon set up I get a screen that says "This device belongs to your organisation", and I can't really do anything except reset the device (then I'm back to square 1). I can click around a few times and see that the device was/is also set up with what I think is called a client manager (it's a Blackberry product in this case). The client manager prompts me to put in a username and pw, but I obviously don't have those. And then it sends me back to where I can reset the device.

I did eventually find a way to bypass the set up and make it to the home screen, but when I got there I get a message that effectively says the the device is controlled by an admin, and that the device will reset itself in 2 hours.

Obviously it appears as though this device was a corporate phone before, but I don't think I can really reach the corporation to do anything about it (though I could try)

Has anyone dealt with this?

What I have tried so far:

-resetting the device (as noted above)

-updating the OS (in this case it was an update to Android 14)

Update: The seller is going to replace the device without hassle. If you run into this issue, this is probably your best solution as well.

You bought a phone that was stolen from a company, then resold.

Get a refund if possible.

Don't put your SIM in it.

Ok. Under any circumstances would it be safe to keep the device? What kind of issue are we talking about here?

The issue is fencing. You wouldn't have that effect in any honest circumstances. Returning it to the seller or notifying the law officials is up to you.

Possibility it was sold off/returned to the carrier when the corporation decided to update their fleet of phones?

I spoke to the seller and they are going to replace the device. Thanks.

I think you're either going to have to root the phone to get the permission to remove the MDM app or you're going to have to wipe and re-flash a stock ROM through fastboot.

Thanks. I think that's all above my pay grade. In the meantime I emailed the Ebay seller to see if they can sort it out.

It's possible that it fell through the cracks and they missed the MDM step, so contacting the seller is definitely your best option.

I bought a "for parts" laptop of eBay and got it working (it was just a bad ram problem) within a day or two of purchase and encountered the Microsoft intune lock. I contacted the seller and he got back to me within a couple of days and told me the previous company had removed the device from the registration list. I think they didn't remove mine because someone half assed the diagnosis and deemed it dead.
Good luck.

Yeah reflash the phone using fastboot that should clear any system level apps that shouldn't be there
