Hello everyone!

I am happy to announce that VSL and I are collaborating on producing a series of mockups of "movie masterpieces" by many of the greatest film composers.

VSL has started hosting the project here:

The Cubase Projects may include third-party plugs-ins for things like algorithmic reverbs and limiters, but hopefully you will still find the projects useful for studying the composers' orchestration techniques as well as giving you some ideas for mocking up pieces like these with VSL.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Always open VE Pro before opening up these Cubase projects!

Thank you for releasing these projects. Good examples on how to integrate VSL plugins with VEPro and Cubase. Hopefully on future releases you'll also integrate MIR Pro 3D.

Hello everyone!

I am happy to announce that VSL and I are collaborating on producing a series of mockups of "movie masterpieces" by many of the greatest film composers.

VSL has started hosting the project here:

VSL will be releasing a new piece every few weeks. So in time, we hope to include many of your favorite pieces and film composers. On the VSL webpage, you will find videos, mp3's and Cubase Projects.

All comments and questions are welcome!

I wish there were a way to open the files with DP...
Does anyone have an old Cubase license? :)

Thanks everyone for listening and posting an encouraging remark. This always improves my mood and my motivation. :emoji_grinning:

@Rubens Tubenchlak - Cubase offers a free 60 day demo so you can peak at the projects and even output the midi data from there.

Free Cubase 60 Day Trial

@wbacer - Yes, there will be many projects that will use Synchron libraries together with SYNCHRON-ized/VI Series libraries with MIR Pro 3D.

Stay tuned for lots more projects in the coming weeks! Feel free to list your favorite film composers so I don't leave anyone out.

Thanks again for the support--
Jay

@Rubens Tubenchlak -- Thanks for taking the time to listen and post.

The SYNCHRON-ized (VI Series) instruments including the saxes, muted brass, solo violin and upright bass were all placed in MIR Pro's Synchron Stage A - Wide.

The Synchron instruments mostly used the "Classic Surround to Stereo" mixer preset.

I used sends in VE Pro to add various amounts of Cinematic Rooms "Amethyst Hall" to many of the instruments (including the ones in MIR Pro).

I also applied a small amount of Cinematic Rooms "Score Stage" on the mix bus.

Finally, Bernd Mazagg mastered the track. So if you want to know what magic he performed, please post again, and I'll see if I can twist Bernd's arm to reveal some of his "secrets."

Best wishes,
Jay

Any chance someone ported some of these over to Studio One already?
Or would anyone be willing to print the midi only (with the track names in a way so that I know what will be what), especially for prince of thieves, so I could look into it?
:emoji_pray:

@JBacal If you find the time, maybe you could add just the midi exports to each entry so that people can easily look into it without having to install a cubase demo? :emoji_sweat_smile:

Promentory - or Main Theme - The Last of the Mohicans, Trevor Jones
Main Theme, Cinema Paradiso, Ennio Morricone
Rivendell / Any, Lord of the Rings, Howard Shore
Any Other Name, American Beauty, Thomas Newmann
Main Title, North by Northwest, Bernard Herrmann
Thème de Camille, Le Mépris, Georges Delerue
Kaneda, Akira, Geinoh Yamashirogumi

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Ryuichi Sakamoto
Yearning of the Sword, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Tan Dun / Yo-Yo Ma

@cedricm — thanks for your excellent suggestions. I will relisten to all of them soon. I definitely plan to represent most (all?) of the great composers on your list. The specific pieces I chose will depend on a number of factors including the availability of a reliable score.

@JBacal if you don't mind me asking, I noticed that in both the Apollo 13 and the Flight to Neverland mock-ups you used the Blüthner 1895 piano. Naively I might have expected that you would have picked one recorded in Synchron Hall A because it would theoretically blend better with the rest of synchron instruments? Was there any particular reason you preferred the Blüthner?

@blaggins — Honestly, if I’m remembering correctly, the piano’s role in those pieces was primarily to reinforce/enrich the frequencies of other instruments rather than to stand out on its own. So I probably just used the piano that was currently on my ssd drive. But a piano recorded in the Synchron stage A probably would have been a better choice.
