The vast majority of Oslo tourists head up to Holmenkollen ski jump to get a panoramic view of Oslo, but locals know the best view of the city is much closer up, on the other side of town towards the plateau of Ekeberg.

Not convinced? Well, it’s the very same setting behind Edvard Munch’s celebrated painting, “The Scream” (Skriket). While you may or may not experience the same emotions as the painting’s protagonist, you’re sure to be awestruck by the view – spring, summer, autumn or fall.

I don’t recommend walking because it’s a long route uphill, but it’s a good walk for those who like that. It’s much closer to the center than Holmenkollen. Take the 34 or 74 bus from downtown (e.g. Oslo S – right side) to the Brannfjellveien stop and continue in the same direction for 100 meters and you’ll see all of downtown Oslo and its surroundings at your feet. Another great thing about this spot is that you can begin a tour of Oslo’s newest (and lesser known) statue park: Ekebergparken.
