When Del Toro promoted his 2013 film in Japan, he came across a life-sized Gundam statue that left him in awe. As the old video resurfaces on the internet, fans call for a live-action Gundam movie directed by the Pan’s Labyrinth director. Some fans also wanted him to consider making another film in the Pacific Rim franchise.
Del Toro’s love for all the nerdy things is quite famous and his home is filled with collectibles and memorabilia. He has also revealed his love for video games and Japanese manga and anime. Seeing the Gundam statue, the true nerd in him just came out.

During the promotion of Pacific Rim in 2013, Guillermo Del Toro took a trip to Tokyo. While visiting DiverCity Tokyo Plaza in Odaiba with two of the movie stars, Rinko Kikuchi and Mana Ashida, Del Toro witnessed one large life-sized Gundam model alongside several 1000 other models in DiverCity. The expression on the filmmaker’s face was priceless in this video of the tour.
Gundam is the fictional giant robot that appears in the Japanese military sci-fi media franchise of the same name. Out of all the projects involving the mecha, the most prominent would be the TV series, Mobile Suit Gundam. Interestingly, fans on X who viewed the video once again want Del Toro to make a film based on the continuity of that series.
One fan shared that Gundam would make a great live-action film with Del Toro at its helm. Another comment shared a screenshot from the video of the Crimson Peak director looking at the giant mecha. While the support kept pouring in for Del Toro’s Gundam, some fans also wanted a sequel to Del Toro’s other mecha v. kaiju film.
Fans demanded a sequel to Del Toro’s 2013 film Pacific Rim, starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, and others. While the film already has an underwhelming sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising, it was not helmed by Del Toro. One fan was even ready to go on his knees to beg the director for a sequel film. If Bandai Namco Filmworks allows, Guillermo Del Toro could even plan a big crossover involving his Pacific Rim and Mobile Suit Gundam. The director is currently focused on his Frankenstein film, in which Jacob Elordi will portray the titular monster.

In Del Toro’s Pacific Rim, a dimensional rift in the Pacific Ocean leads to the emergence of a kaiju that destroys major cities. To fight the creature, world governments developed a large mecha called Jaeger. The battle between the mecha and kaiju saw the special effects being put to their best use. However, the movie’s truly remarkable achievement is how its potential remains relevant even today.
The Jaegers in the film were exciting for fans of Gundam, who saw the potential of a live-action Gundam film. The film also proved how dramatic stories and emotional battles between the large monsters could be convincingly brought to the screen, just with a brilliant director at the helm. If fans pushed for it, a live-action Gundam film from Del Toro wouldn’t be a distant dream.
