10-foot-wide house that was built 'out of spite' is selling for $619k

A 1,547-square-foot home is selling for much more than you'd expect.

Your average home size in Florida is said to be around 1,700 square feet, making this property pretty tiny.

In fact, it only stands at 10-feet-wide and two-storeys high, with most of the property being designed to be in one straight line.

You'd think a home of this size wouldn't be that expensive, but it's currently listed at $619,000.

Located in South Jacksonville Beach, the 'unique' property is described as being on a 'narrow but deep lot', and could be ideal for anyone looking for 'a low maintenance and energy efficient home that comes with a builder backed warranty' - as per the listing.

Looking at it, the house is pretty inoffensive; but its construction ruffled a few local's feathers.

Apparently the lot it was built on was previously used as a garden by a neighbor, so they weren't best pleased to learn that a house was being built there.

The aggrieved neighbor and other locals then attended a public hearing to voice their concerns, which ended with the board going on to disallow any adjustments to the lot.

This meant that the builder could only erect a 10ft wide home instead of a proposed 15ft wide one.

With the neighbors' pushback in mind, apparently the builder wanted to create the home 'out of spite'.

Listing agent Ryan Wetherhold of Oceanside Real Estate explained to Business Insider: "What you can do on these smaller lots is you can go in front of a board of adjustment, and they'll allow you to build more than the building code is allowed."

Noting that the builder lost the vote to extend the lot, he added: "To be honest, the builder almost built this out of spite just because of that fact, 'Oh, you don't think we can build, hold my beer.'"

Despite not getting his way, the builder still managed to create a liveable home - and it's bigger than it looks from the front.

While it looks like a luxury doll's house at first glance, the home boasts two bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, as well as a garage that's large enough for one car.

Also adding to its appeal is the fact that a lot of the furniture is already built in - including the beds, dining table and bedside stands.

The listing goes on to state that the backyard could be big enough for a pool to be built too.

Not too shabby for a home that's only 10ft wide.
