The al-Abbas Shrine has reached 85 percent completion in implementing the first phase of the Southern Green Belt Project.
The head of the Green Belt Department in the Ataba, Nasser Hussein Al-Khazali, told Al-Sabah: The directives of the Ataba administration, represented by the legal guardian, Ahmed Al-Safi, focus on implementing projects that have environmental and economic repercussions for the city of Karbala.
He added that one of the most prominent projects that Ataba has begun implementing is the Southern Green Belt Project with an area of 27 kilometers, extending from the northeast of the governorate to its southwest on the Baghdad Road to the Holy Najaf Road. Al-Khazali stated that the project achieved advanced completion rates of 85 percent within its first phase, as local and imported trees such as palms, olives, eucalyptus, apricots and other types of trees were planted. He continued that the project has important economic dimensions through the cultivation of important crops, as there are 24 oases in which the latest methods of irrigation and cultivation were used, which had positive results, in addition to the presence of environmental dimensions in this project, which the Ataba took over in the year 2022 after it was stopped. He has been working on it for many years, noting that the southern Green Belt has today become an important tourist destination and a destination for the people of the governorate and nearby governorates. The Green Belt project in Karbala Governorate is divided into two parts, the northern and southern belts, and its total area ranges from 800 to 1000 dunams, and the southern belt was established. Its length is 27 km, while the northern area is 22 km.
