Six Degrees Of Evisceration: Kevin Bacon Relives An Old Horror For The Anniversary Of ‘Friday The 13th’
For more than four decades, actor Kevin Bacon has been one of the most successful names in Hollywood, his resume so lengthy and diverse that an entire parlor game exists based on just how many actors have, at one point or another, found themselves in his orbit.
From playing a handyman fighting against giant, man-eating desert worms in Tremors, a med student experimenting with death in Flatlines, to the mutant villain Seabstian Shaw in X-Men: First Class, Bacon has proven himself such a versatile actor – so much so that his career has easily transcended genres.
But despite standing in a league of his own, after all this time, it appears he still can’t shake his association with one particular role: That of Camp Crystal Lake counselor Jack in the original Friday the 13th.
In case someone out there isn’t familiar with the film, the seminal 1980 slasher follows a group of counselors as they attempt to reopen the local summer camp, Camp Crystal Like, years after two people were murdered in one of the local cabins.
However, their summer plans are soon cut short – pun intended – when an unseen killer begins to snuff them out-by-one, each murder more gruesome than the last.
The first entry in one of the most beloved horror franchises of all time, perhaps the most famous death in the entire film (and that’s saying something, as there are a few good ones) is given to Kevin’s character, Jack, his throat pierced by an arrow thrust up from underneath his bed just moments after ‘making bacon’ with fellow counselor Marcie.
Thanks to the grisly practical magic provided by then-up-and-coming-special effects legend Tom Savini, not only did the scene leave people with a new reason to check below their own beds every night, but it also went down in history as one that most people will never forget – including Bacon’s family.
On May 9th, Friday the 13th celebrated the 44th anniversary of its original theatrical release, and to commemorate the occasion, Bacon’s wife, actress Kyra Sedgwick, and adult kids, Travis Sedgwick & actress Sosie Bacon, decided to play a ‘pointed’ prank on him while taking an afternoon siesta:
Many big names start off their careers in horror, and then try their best to distance themselves from it after finding success, so it’s a welcome sight to see Bacon still happily embracing his past trip to Camp Crystal Lake.
It would be great to see a few more of them getting back in touch with their bloody roots. Maybe Johnny Depp could be convinced to reenact his own iconic bedroom demise from A Nightmare on Elm Street? It’s doubtful, but a person can still dream.
