AnchorGT: A Novel Attention Architecture for Graph Transformers as a Flexible Building Block to Improve the Scalability of a Wide Range of Graph Transformer Models

Transformers have revolutionized machine learning in areas like natural language processing and computer vision, but struggled with graph data due to computational complexity. AnchorGT, a new model, addresses this by using strategically chosen “anchor” nodes to reduce computational burden while capturing global information. By leveraging k-dominating sets from graph theory, AnchorGT redesigns the attention mechanism to attend to local neighbors and anchor nodes, improving scalability and expressive power. Experimental results show that AnchorGT outperforms traditional models like Graphormer and GraphGPS on various graph learning tasks, while being more memory-efficient and faster. The model strikes a balance between computational efficiency and expressive power, making graph Transformers practical for large-scale graph data without compromising their strengths. This work opens up possibilities for more scalable and effective graph learning methods, expanding the application of Transformers to diverse domains involving graph-structured data. The researchers provide a theoretical proof of AnchorGT’s expressive power and demonstrate its advantages in real-world datasets and synthetic graph experiments. Overall, AnchorGT represents a significant advancement in graph Transformer models, offering a promising solution for handling graph data efficiently and effectively.
