Mark Bellhorn seemed like the whipping boy for that team all year long. I remember him having some struggles at 2B and everyone blowing it way out of proportion.

I was so pumped when he turned into a post-season hero and made everyone forget about it. When he broke the tie in game one of the WS, I was absolutely positive they were going to close out the series. I had never experienced that feeling as a Red Sox fan before, lol.

I’m doing a series on my YouTube channel that goes over every single win of the 2004 Red Sox season, and 27 wins into the season the dude has had at least 4-5 huge hits. Underrated in my opinion.

Big time. I remember him being one of my favorite players, but if you made an error in town ball, someone always shouted Bellllhoooorrrrn

Bellhorn was a really underrated player. He would have been much more appreciated in the modern game than he was at the time.

He struck out a ton, but that is tolerated much more today. He had a great eye, resulting in a very strong OBP that made up for his pedestrian batting average. He had very good pop for a middle infielder.

He an .817 OPS and 3.7 WAR in that 2004 season. Manny, Papi and Damon were all in the 4.1 - 4.3 WAR range, so Bellhorn was contributing nearly as much value as those guys.

Our front office was way ahead of the times in those days and they recognized how well he could protect our best hitters by hitting bombs in the bottom of the lineup card

The Sox then proceeded to win 7-6 in a walkoff 4 batters later after Ortiz struck out, Manny walked, Millar popped out and Varitek hit a pinch-hit double to drive Ramirez in.

I have a highlight of that video coming tomorrow :)

If I recall, Manny didn't slide because he was celebrating and was nearly tagged out at home.

You recall correctly. Manny had absolutely no idea where the ball was and jogged across the plate just before the tag arrived. Good times.
