Police have explained why the helicopter was circling over parts of Nuneaton at the weekend. Locals spotted a National Police Air Service (NPAS) chopper hovering around parts of Camp Hill, Stockingford and Whittleford on Saturday afternoon.

It was up for more than an hour during the early afternoon. A Warwickshire Police spokesperson explained that the helicopter was used as part of a search for a bike that failed to stop for police in the Kingswood Road area.

Despite the response, the police did not manage to find the bike and local Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) are now leading an investigation to find the vehicle and rider. It comes at a time when police say they are cracking down on anti-social bikers.

In recent weeks there have been growing calls on social media locally for efforts to be stepped up to tackle the problem. Chief Inspector Kris Shore, Northern Area Commander, said “Warwickshire Police strives to keep you the public safe. We’re taking a zero-tolerance approach to ASB and bike thefts in our county, and we need your help to tackle it.

“If you’re aware of nuisance motorbikes, threatening behaviour, violence, ASB – report it to us as soon as possible, and we’ll come down on it like a tonne of bricks.”

He urged anyone with issues with nuisance motorbikes to report it at www.warwickshire.gov.uk/dobemin.
