Ed Ruth was absolutely nuts back in the day

I was shocked that he never made it on the senior level scene. He’s one of the best takedown artists I’ve ever seen in college. And he was a murderer on top. Always on his toes looking for cradles and tilts

He didn't spend long doing it. Went into fighting, then coaching, now he lives in Europe.

Yeah, I looked and saw that he’s in Croatia. That’s wild. Also you might have the best profile name on this page lol

Croatia? Since when lol last I saw he’s an assistant at Illinois.

u/Arsecarn avatar

His wife is Croatian. He left the Illinois staff to move to Croatia with her last year.

He made a world team before but im pretty sure david was caels priority and ed had other options open at the time

Oh yeah you’re right. I think he went down to Sunkist. But if he came up now in the NLWC era he probably would have been battling Taylor for 86kg the last 6 years

Ed Ruth is one of the Penn State greats in my opinion

Easy Ed always kept a smooth but constant pace like he swimming. The original Penn State flow wrestler exploring all angles to score. And the slow crowd chants of RUTHHHH were so epic and demoralizing to his opponents just getting picked apart.

u/Snail_Canderson avatar

He made it look so easy all the time. One of the greatest college wrestlers ever.

The wife and I have had season tix for psu for probably 15 years now, so we’ve seen a lot of good wrestling. She side eyes me every time I say Ruth has been the best to come through there in that time span. But I fully believe he is the best. Junior and senior year there was no one who could even come close.

u/Snail_Canderson avatar

I have Ruth, Nolf, and Retherford over both 4xer's

Only other wrestler who made it look as easy as Cael.

An unpopular opinion I’ve had for awhile is that his prime in college wrestling was better than anyone else’s. I take prime Ruth pfp over any college wrestler ever.

The change of direction is crazy.

Honestly watching PSU from 2010-2017 was just obscene, they’re still solid but the Taylor/Ruth/That one guy who hit banana splits all the time at 197 era was wild, then Nolf and Nickal, just wild.

u/Snail_Canderson avatar

Quentin Wright?

u/Responsible-Try-5228 avatar

That dude was nasty, that over/under trip thing he somehow always hit that would never work for me.

His footwork was god damn insane

Back when college wrestlers used to actually wrestle. A 30-0 record from a top PSU kid is no longer a thing unfortunately.

u/borklaser1337 avatar

Yeah and, how funny, these kids who “don’t wrestle” are already beyond Ruth’s peak on the international scene. I wonder why…

u/BasedBruceWayne avatar

What Penn St wrestler is past DT’s peak? I wonder why…

So nasty

u/No-Command-9141 avatar

Peak Ed Ruth is the best wrestler in Penn state history. I get he’s not a 4x’er but when he was at his best, it was unreal

I would give my left nut to be that good with my offense.

u/TheRobberBar0n avatar

Ed Ruth-less. One of my absolute favorite wrestlers to watch

I remember this, grew up with Nick Heflin. Perry wrestling was insane

u/VinnieVidiViciVeni avatar

I tried that on my coach at my old gym after seeing that match. Let’s just say he saw the same match. 😂

u/LethalLefty01 avatar

Woulda been out of control w a 3pt takedown

u/DR650SE avatar

His wrestling is so smooth and relaxed.
