Elon, N.C.- The Elon Phoenix (21-32, 10-17 CAA) closed out the regular season on Saturday afternoon is losing fashion to the College of Charleston Cougars (39-12, 21-5 CAA). The Phoenix finished the regular season at Latham Park with a 13-1 loss in six innings.
Tank Yaghoubi finished his torrid final third of the season with a 2-for-2 day at the plate including the second homer of his weekend. Yaghoubi found a surge of power in the final weekend with his first and second career collegiate home runs coming against the Cougars.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- College of Charleston jumped out of the gates with a solo home run on the first pitch of the afternoon.
- Ryan Sprock was able to control the bats by retiring three straight before a pair of singles in the second inning led to another Cougar run.
- Charleston brought home another run in the third on their second solo home run of the game, while Shane Paradine continued to be the only Elon batter with a hit through two.
- Tank Yaghoubi found a base hit in the third to continue his strong weekend before a double play axed the Phoenix scoring chance.
- After a run in the fifth, Charleston broke the game open with six runs in the sixth. The Cougars batted around with Avery Neaves finding a triple and single in the inning to complete his cycle.
- Tank Yaghoubi led off the sixth by taking the first pitch he saw over the right field fence to break through Charleston's pitching.
- The floodgates opened in the sky and the game was called in the sixth inning with Charleston taking a 13-1 win back to Patriots Point.
NOTES AND STATS
- Ryan Sprock got the start for the Phoenix and got the loss. Sprock struck out three and walked none in 3.1 innings of work.
- Ethan Haislip had one of his top relief efforts in his final game at Latham Park. He struck out a pair of Charleston hitters in his one inning of scoreless relief.
- Tank Yaghoubi hit his second homer of the weekend in the bottom of the sixth to close out his CAA campaign with a .395 batting average against conference opponents.
- Shane Paradine singled in his final game at Latham Park, capping his career with 199 career hits.
UP NEXT
- Elon did not qualify for the CAA Tournament, so the road stops here for the Phoenix. A CAA champion will be crowned in Wilmington, N.C. later next week.
