Our workweek ends tranquilly, but the weekend looks at least partially damp on the edge of a rainstorm.

7:20 a.m. update: Low clouds became quite numerous overnight and don’t appear to be in a major hurry to depart. While we should still see breaks in the clouds at times today, it will probably end up cloudier than originally anticipated in the forecast. This may keep temperatures to the lower side of expected as well.

Rain is still slated to hold off until at least evening, with a better chance for some at night.

Today’s daily digit

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

7/10: A bright enough day with comfortable temperatures on tap. Stray shower chances are low and breezes light. A very decent end to the workweek!

Express forecast

  • Today: Slowly increasing clouds. Shower? Highs: Mid- to upper 70s.
  • Tonight: Showers and light rain. Lows: Upper 50s to low 60s.
  • Tomorrow: Showers or periods of rain. Highs: 60s
  • Sunday: Fewer showers and storms. Highs: Upper 60s to mid-70s.

Forecast in detail

Our workweek ends on a calm note with higher forecast confidence than the rest of the weekend when we’re on a storm system’s edge. This brings forecast uncertainty for precipitation amounts and timing. So far, south and west of town should see higher, soaking rain amounts; lighter amounts north and east.

Stay tuned for small storm track shifts that could increase or decrease potential rain totals and alter the timing of rain currently focusing from Saturday into early Sunday.

Today (Friday): Morning sunshine could be filtered by high clouds, but it’s brighter than not. More consequential clouds should wait for afternoon hours, when we could turn mostly cloudy at times. Dew points should stay under 60 degrees, helping keep mid- to upper 70s feeling comfortable enough. Light breezes generally have an easterly component. Stray showers, if any, wait until mid-to-late afternoon. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Showers become likelier with time. We have the potential for light but steady rain in the pre-dawn hours, too. An insulating, nearly solid layer of clouds act like a blanket, keeping temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s. Light but steady breezes from the southeast may blow. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Saturday): Showers and periods of rain may favor points south and west, but we’ll probably see some off and on through the day. Timing of the main rain should be morning into midafternoon or so. However, even late day a shower, storm, or quick downpour can’t be ruled out. Breezes from the east and southeast continue off the Atlantic, helping keep temperatures in the 60s, or probably within a few degrees of 65. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Showers may include a thunderstorm or two. Temperatures bottom out in the mid- to upper 50s. Expect light breezes from the east and northeast. Confidence: Medium

Sunday: Showers remain likely, especially during the morning. We may see some afternoon peeks of sunshine, which would help destabilize the atmosphere enough to create a thunderstorm or two. Upper 60s to mid-70s are now possible, as Sunday rain amounts have decreased in the forecast. Confidence: Medium

A look ahead

Sunday night: A few showers can’t be ruled out as skies try to slowly clear. Low temperatures aim within a few degrees of 55. We could see even some patchy fog before sunrise. Confidence: Medium

Skies trend brighter Monday and especially Tuesday, assuming our pesky weekend storm system can continue its trek out to sea. Temperatures should be in the 70s to near 80 both days, but Monday has a bit of downside risk since more cloud cover than currently expected has the potential to keep it slightly cooler. Confidence: Medium
