The Rockies make the trip to San Diego to face the Padres! The Rockies are in the running for one of the worst teams in the league, while the Padres have talent, but have been inconsistent and have consistently sat at .500 most of the year. Our MLB odds series has our Rockies-Padres prediction, odds, and pick for Wednesday.

The Rockies are a candidate for the worst team in the MLB. They are 13-28 but have won five straight most recently. Their bats have been very good this season, while they have the second-worst pitching staff in the MLB, only in front of the Marlins. Brendan Rodgers, Ryan McMahon, Ezequiel Tovar, Brenton Doyle, and Elias Diaz have all been solid for the Rockies behind the plate. Cal Quantrill and Austin Gomber have been okay at best for a unit that has struggled. The Rockies' offense has improved, but their pitching has been very bad and has struggled at times this season overall.

The Padres have been decent to start the season, but inconsistent in wins and losses at a 22-22 record so far on the season. The key has been their offense this season where they are in the top 10 overall as a unit. In comparison, their pitching is hovering around the middle of the pack of the MLB. Fernando Tatis, Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, Jurickson Profar, Jackson Merrill, and Jake Cronenworth have been the biggest keys behind the plate and why the Padres have started better than most originally thought before this season. Their pitching gained a boost after they added Dylan Cease to a lineup that already had Michael King and Yu Darvish who all have been playing well so far up to this point.

Why The Rockies Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Rockies are starting Austin Gomber on the mound. He's started the year with a 0-2 record, a 3.43 ERA, and a 1.25 WHIP. He has allowed 18 runs on 41 hits with 15 walks and 30 strikeouts through 44.2 innings. The Rockies are only 3-5 in his eight appearances this season. In his last start, he pitched 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in a Rockies win. Gomber has been a bright spot for a pitching staff that has been one of the worst in the MLB.

The Rockies' offense has been a bright spot, especially recently. They are 11th in team batting average at .245 after finishing last season with a .249 batting average. The offense is led by Elias Diaz and Ryan McMahon. Diaz leads the way in batting average at .301. McMahon then leads the way in home runs at five, RBI at 21, OBP at .384, and in total hits at 46. This offense has a tough matchup against Michael King who has been solid for the Padres on the mound this season.

Why The Padres Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Padres are starting Michael King as a pitcher in this spot. So far this year, he has a 3-3 record, a 3.67 ERA, and a 1.31 WHIP. Through 49 innings, he has allowed 25 runs on 40 hits with 24 walks and 54 strikeouts. He has appeared in nine total games so far this season and the Padres have gone 6-3 in those games. In his last start, he pitched seven innings and allowed zero runs on two hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts in a win. Michael King has been a solid pitcher for the Padres this season and gets a decent matchup against a red-hot Rockies offense behind the plate.

The Padres' offense has started the season playing great. They are sixth in team batting average at .254 after finishing last season with a .244 batting average. The offense is highlighted mainly by Jurickson Profar and Fernando Tatis Jr. in most of the batting categories. Profar leads the way in batting average at .320, in RBI at 29, in OBP at .402, and in total hits at 47. Tatis Jr. then leads the way in home runs at eight. Their offense can compete with any team in the MLB, but they get a decent matchup against Austin Gomber for the Rockies at pitcher.

Final Rockies-Padres Prediction & Pick

The Rockies have been red-hot recently, winning five straight games overall. The Padres need to find some more consistency as a team, but they are the more talented team. The difference in pitchers is marginal between Gomber for the Rockies and King for the Padres. Both offenses are also playing well right now behind the plate. This game should be very close and the Rockies should cover, even if the Padres win, it should be a close game.
