Mumbai Indians crashed to an 18-run defeat to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Wankhede Stadium on May 17. The outcome also ensured that the Hardik Pandya-led team is now poised to finish the IPL 2024 season at the bottom of the 10-team points table.

The five-time winners, under new leadership this year, managed to secure just four wins amidst 10 defeats from 14 league fixtures. Notably, through their dismal IPL 2024 performance, they levelled up with their 2022 IPL feat to record a new-low in the history of the franchise.

Hardik levels with Rohit Sharma for unwanted record

Hardik Pandya was acquired by the Mumbai Indians management back in November 2023. The following month, he was appointed as the new captain of the franchise for the IPL 2024 season, thus replacing five-time winner and decade-long skipper Rohit Sharma in the process.

Pandya, who himself is an IPL winning skipper for Gujarat Titans, failed to yield the desired results for Mumbai Indians as they finished IPL 2024 at the bottom of the points table with just four wins from 14 matches.

Interestingly, the 10 defeats they sustained this year matched Mumbai Indians’ previous record low from IPL 2022, where they also lost 10 games in 14 attempts to finish at the bottom of the 10-team standings. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the team suffered the dismal fate even though most of their 14 league matches were held in front of the home crowds in Mumbai.

After Mumbai Indians’ disastrous returns from IPL 2024 under Hardik Pandya, here is a look at the list of five most defeats suffered by the franchise in a single IPL season:

Most defeats for MI in an IPL season:

  • 10 defeats in IPL 2022
  • 10 defeats in IPL 2024
  • 8 defeats in IPL 2009
  • 8 defeats in IPL 2014
  • 8 defeats in IPL 2018

A number of Mumbai Indians players like Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav will now be seen taking flight for the USA for next month’s T20 World Cup 2024.
