Former Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) skipper Virender Sehwag has revealed that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) management was keen on appointing him as the captain of the franchise ahead of the inaugural edition of the IPL back in 2008. As Sehwag did not enter the 2008 IPL auction having already accepted the offer from Delhi, the Men in Yellow had to go for MS Dhoni who was subsequently made their skipper.

Speaking to Fever FM, the former swashbuckling Indian batter stated that he was asked by VB Chandrasekhar who was an integral part of forming the core team of the Chennai Super Kings back then over a phone call not to accept Delhi's offer ahead of the player auction. Recalling the incident, Sehwag said:

"VB Chandrashekhar was selecting the players for CSK. He phone-called me and said, 'We want you to play for CSK. Delhi Daredevils want you to be their icon. Don't accept the offer'. I was like, fine, we will see. Finally, I received the offer from Delhi Daredevils to be their icon player and I accepted it. I didn't go into the auction.
"If I were a part of the auction, CSK would've bought me and made me the captain of the side. But then, they bought MS Dhoni and made him the captain."

Virender Sehwag played the first six editions of the IPL for Delhi Daredevils before moving to Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) whom he represented for two seasons - 2014 and 2015.

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) gunning for their 6th IPL crown

With the final IPL 2024 playoff spot at stake, the Chennai Super Kings will be taking on Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, May 18, in what promises to be a blockbuster clash. A victory in Bengaluru or even a point from the game, if it gets washed out due to rain, is enough for them to secure the playoff spot.

With this season's final all set to be played at their home ground, the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk on Sunday, May 26, the five-time IPL winners will be hoping to maintain the momentum and make it to the summit clash. It will be a great chance for Ruturaj Gaikwad's men to claim their record-sixth crown in front of their passionate home fans.
