From Philosophy Leisure course to University!
In a heart-warming testament to the power of lifelong learning, Philosophy Leisure student Bob Lakin (75), is set to embark on an undergraduate Philosophy degree at the University of Winchester. Bob was so inspired by his Philosophy course here at AHED that he applied to university to continue his studies, gaining an unconditional offer to start this September.
Bob first enrolled onto our 10-week Introduction to Philosophy course in September 2023 and found himself captivated by the subject. Under the guidance of tutor, Chris Higginson, Bob and his classmates delved into topics such as Ethics, Stoicism and Existentialism and all decided to re-enrol for a further two terms of study. Reflecting on his experience, Bob remarked, “the true highlight of the course is Chris Higginson himself. He is knowledgeable on all aspects of Philosophy and he approaches sessions with thoughtful humility, in a quest to advance understanding for us all. Although I am 75, attendance at this course has inspired me to go further with philosophical study and this would not have happened without Chris’s course.”
Bob’s journey from Leisure course participant to university undergraduate is a testament to the transformative power of education at any age and demonstrates the importance of leisure courses in providing individuals with opportunities for personal growth and development. Bob’s tutor, Chris, says “I am immensely proud of Bob and thrilled that he has been inspired to continue with Philosophy. It was a pleasure to have him in the classroom and this serves as a reminder that it is never too late to pursue one’s passions and interests and embark on a new journey.”
