Some celebrate Peter Jackson for his famous trilogy, while others for his legendary classics.

Most people probably know – and love – Peter Jackson for his Lord of the Rings films. The Middle Earth trilogy grossed almost three billion dollars, received 17 Oscars and is considered by many to be one of the best franchises of all time. Horror fans, on the other hand, will likely associate the New Zealander primarily with his early work, as he began his career – like many of today’s blockbuster directors (including Sam Raimi, James Gunn and James Wan) – with low-budget productions such as Trash – Náusea Total.

But then the fantasy genius with a penchant for crazy, bloodthirsty entertainment brought back one of the most legendary movie monsters of all – and thus achieved the supposedly impossible: King Kong is not just an old-school feature film, but a grand epic. success, which can even compare to the innovative original.

Of course, the new edition didn’t have the same effect as the 1933 original – after all, people in the 21st century are too enlightened to believe that a giant ape could actually be ravaging the city. And, perhaps, King Kong is the best adventure film of the last 20 years – one that revives the splendor of the great Hollywood classics. Now you can see exactly this on Netflix, in addition to Prime Video and Globoplay.

King Kong: See the first images of the Broadway musical

If you want to experience an epic like this in accordance with the motto more is more, you will have to make concessions when it comes to streaming. However, you can get the full version of King Kong on blu-ray. Because in addition to the already impressive 187-minute theatrical version, this one also contains the even longer, even more epic cut, clocking in at 200 minutes.

Peter Jackson’s definitive film

Everyone knows the story of the mysterious monster from Skull Island, who is hunted to be presented in chains to the Western world as the eighth wonder of the world. But even though all film fans are probably familiar with Kong’s tragic fate, Jackson manages to establish new impulses with his film, telling the story of the gigantic primate in a moving way and illustrating it with an almost incomparable wealth of ideas. The result: a truly monumental cinematic experience that doesn’t need to be hidden even from Titanic and company. The many similarities with James Cameron’s mega blockbuster can hardly be dismissed.

Because, like the saga of Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet), King Kong is at heart a tragic romance of enormous proportions – but at the center of it are Beauty (Naomi Watts) and the Beast (Kong). Similar to Titanic, King Kong not only reminds us of the magic that has been cinema for over a hundred years, but also explores its possibilities for telling great stories.

Furthermore, the film is a true love letter to Hollywood – with the story of a naive and dreamy actress (Watts), an unsuccessful author (Adrien Brody) and a talented director (Jack Black), and last but not least Importantly, a thank you to its visual splendor.

King Kong is an extraordinary symbiosis of tradition and revolution and, similar to Titanic, creates a fascinating, historically inspired and elevated world in which elaborate sets as well as revolutionary CGI ideally complement each other. Be it the romanticized New York of the 1930s or the exotic homeland of Kong; be the ship on which filmmaker Carl Denham (Black) and his crew embark on a disastrous adventure; or the eponymous monkey, whose animation still surprises almost 20 years later. Kong is a visual delight with a classic adventure feel – something Hollywood can hardly manage today.

Neither The Lord of the Rings nor The Hobbit: Peter Jackson’s most acclaimed film raised eyebrows, but is now cult

Of course, WETA co-founder Peter Jackson no longer needs to prove to anyone that he knows his way around digital effects. And horror fans know from his early work that he has mastered practical special effects like no other. But in King Kong the strengths of first and future Peter come together better than ever.

Although it is primarily a classic fantasy adventure with great illustrations, Jackson’s origins as a filmmaker also have a large influence on his film adaptation of Kong, which reveals genuine horror in countless isolated shots as well as entire scenes. And the fact that, among all the monstrous action, it is also about a very special, impossible and therefore tragic love that breaks your heart over and over again is what ultimately crowns the film.
