Lacy Lakeview, TX (FOX 44) — A Lacy Lakeview couple quite literally felt the heat Sunday morning with part of their home getting melted from a live burn training exercise by the Lacy Lakeview Volunteer Fire Department.

Susan and John May have lived in their home for 48 years.

The May’s say the Lacy Lakeview VFD was doing a live burn training exercise at a vacant property right beside them for the flames to get out of control and reach their home within an hour.

The May’s came back to their home on Monday unsure where to begin repairs.

“There’s still the anxiety with getting it done. It’s going to take a while,” said Susan May.

“Who’s going to do the job and how are they going to do it,” said John May.

The May’s had to quickly evacuate grabbing their pet birds and dog in the heat of the moment.

They had concerns something like this would happen.

“First and foremost, we wish they had never done it. We were told later we could have told them we didn’t want to. We didn’t know we had that option. We had no knowledge, but anyway they did it,” said Susan May.

The May’s are back inside the house and have concerns about their health breathing in the smoke.

Lacy Lakeview city officials didn’t want to speak on camera, but visited the May’s to tell them they can fix the outside of their home.
