Early Life and Education

Titus B. Welliver, now 63, was born on March 12, 1961, in New Haven, Connecticut, to Neil Welliver, a celebrated landscape painter, and Norma Cripps. He grew up alongside his brothers Silas, Eli, and Rufus.

His father was also a faculty member at Yale University and eventually became the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Fine Art dean. His mother, Norma Cripps, was a fashion illustrator. 

In the early 1980s, he pursued drama at New York University before venturing into a career in film and television. At New York University, he formed a friendship with Adam Sandler in a comedy writing class.

Personal Life

He has had four marriages and is the father of three children, Quinn, Cora, and Eamonn Welliver. Currently, he is in a relationship with Samantha Edge. In various interviews, he has discussed how his personal experiences of loss have influenced his portrayal of Harry Bosch.

Career

He has been involved in numerous film projects, such as The Doors (1991), Mobsters (1991), Mulholland Falls (1996), Rough Riders (1997), Once in the Life (2000), Biker Boyz (2003), Twisted (2004), and Assault on Precinct 13 (2005).

He appeared in the first four films directed by Ben Affleck: Gone Baby Gone (2007), The Town (2010), Argo (2012), and Live by Night (2016).

In television, he had recurring roles as a doctor on NYPD Blue and as one of the main characters on the CBS police drama Brooklyn South. He is also recognized for portraying the semi-regular character Silas Adams on the HBO series Deadwood. 

Furthermore, he appeared in Prison Break, NBC’s Life, and the season five finale of Lost as the “Man in Black,” a role he continued in the sixth and final season. In addition, he appeared in an episode of Touched by an Angel in 1999 and played a rapist on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2002.

He joined FX’s Sons of Anarchy midway through season two, playing Irish gun kingpin Jimmy O’Phelan. In 2009, he began portraying Prosecutor Glenn Childs, a rival of Chris Noth’s character, on the CBS series The Good Wife.

He also had a recurring role as Thorwald, a local warlord fighting underground in a dying world infected by a global pandemic, on the apocalyptic drama The Last Ship for its first two seasons.

He stars in the TV series Bosch from Amazon Studios, based on the novels by Michael Connelly. The first season was released on Amazon Prime Video on February 13, 2015, and the series was renewed for a seventh and final season on February 13, 2020.
