Did they ever make any albums like Rio?

I’m not the biggest Duran Duran fan as much as I am with other bands like Depeche Mode and U2 and Tears for Fears. However I do like them and Rio is a favorite album. Are there any albums you’d recommend? I do wanna be a bigger fan than I already am lol

Check out the newer All You Need Is Now. It's really a tribute to their Rio sound, and it's wonderful.

Came here to say this. “Being Followed”, “Blame the Machines”, “Other Peoples Lives” would fit right in on Rio

absolutely get the 1981 self-titled debut album, “duran duran” and “rio” work great together, and most would suggest “seven and the ragged tiger” at the same time.

after that, it’s a much more interesting discussion about where to go, depending on what you like or don’t like. you can’t really go wrong with any of their singles collections, and could take direction from what you find on those.

Also take a listen to songs by 'Arcadia' - a band formed when Simon, Nick and Roger tried something different. I find songs like 'The Flame' have the early 'View to a Kill' vibe about them.

absolutely include “so red the rose,” that’s a top tier album no matter whose names are attached to it.

Yep definitely and u have Grace Jones, David Gilmour and Sting on there too. Not to mention it was one of the most expensive albums made at the time. 👍👍

oh yeah

Oh that’s such an interesting observation regarding The Flame. I can totally see that now, I agree 100%

This is an incredibly honest answer.

Aside from their first album, and Seven and the Ragged Tiger, I'd say All You Need is Now (2011)

Duran Duran like to change up their vibe on every album, so you can get funk rock on one album, alternative rock on another, R&B dance on another, etc.,etc.... that's what makes them so great, in my opinion ♥️

I find it odd that nobody has mentioned The Wedding Album (1993) or Future Past (2021). They are both amazing and newer albums. Give them a listen.

Future Past is especially close to the 'Rio sound' IMO

Same. First time I heard Future Past I thought they were truly trying to recreate their 80s sound. I think the album is amazing. It's like new nostalgia. So my best of list is now Rio, Duran Duran 82, Notorious, Future Past, Seven Ragged Tiger, ...

As others said here:

-listen to the (self titled) debut album, from 1981. Both it and Rio complement each other.

-All you need is now (2011) is a great nod to Rio. Highly recommended.

I'll also recommend Notorious, for a "funky" DD.

EDIT: For a "lounge sound" DD, check the Astronaut album.

Rio is a great album, but you are missing what most Durannies would consider their favorites!

You’d definitely need to listen to their first album, to hear a more raw, less produced sound. In the first album, you hear the raw talent, with subsequent albums you hear what that sounds like polished up and gone all MTV.

The nice thing about Duran Duran is they evolve and from album to album it’s really pronounced and yet it’s still at its core “their” music.

If you are looking for their very best highest quality albums other than Rio, then the 3 I highly recommend are Seven & the Ragged Tiger, Astronaut and All You Need is Now albums. Not to say I don’t like the others of course.

IMO AYNIN is the most like Rio.

I love Astronaut and am a fan of the other bands you listed in your post.

Their 2011 album "All You Need is Now" was basically the band's attempt to sort of recapture the sound they had during the Rio era. Mark Ronson produced that album and really pushed them to embrace old instruments and influences and such.

For many people, it was their strongest album in years and maybe even since their first two albums. And I would even argue that the initial nine-track iTunes release in late 2010 makes a run at being their most consistent album ever. The songs are that strong!

The first album is a new wave classic. One of the best of the era

So what would you recommend they listen to next?

Duran Duran (self titled), Seven & The Ragged Tiger.

All You Need is Now to me is Rio adjacent. It’s a solid album with not a bad track on it. Also more recent.

I guess it depends on your taste.

My favorites would be Duran Duran 1981

Arcadia (Spit off group) So Red The Rose (1985).

I think those two albums are perfect (as is Rio). If you enjoy those I would suggest:

Seven and the Ragged Tiger (1983)

Future Past (2021)

I personally enjoy:

Big Thing (1988)

Notorious (1986)

Future Past
