Song vs. Song suggestion: "Don't Marry Her" by The Beautiful South vs. "Kiss Me" by Sixpence None the Richer
A cynical country-ish anti-love song from a British pop-rock band (formed from the ashes of a Christian jangle pop band) and a sincere, twee love song from a Christian alt rock group that nevertheless fit together ridiculously well imo.
I personally love this idea, but I don't think The Beautiful South have much of a presence outside the UK for this to be of much interest to most of the podcast's audience. My vote would go to Don't Marry Her for personal reasons. Putting aside my personal feelings, it'd be a much more difficult choice
Huh, I hadn't realized TBS were such a Europe-only success; til I thought of this I hadn't realized they were British or the Housemartins connection, what w/the country rock sound of this song and the lyrics mentioning San Francisco, I thought "the Beautiful South" was a reference to the US south, not an ironic reference to the English south from a couple of northerners.
Still, it's not like they're against covering songs that are a little more obscure, I think Neutral Molk Hotel pretty firmly ripped that band-aid off.
Kiss me should go against another actual late ‘90/ hit. I was thinking Lovefool as it’s another female pop rock hit from a romcom.
TV Tropes also mentioned Truly Madly Deeply.
Kiss me is the song for that defines the 90s, to me whenever I hear that sing, it just screams the 90s.
The Beautiful South weren't popular in the US so that doesn't have much chance of happening. Interesting band though.
