Nicole Richie and Joel Madden agree to disagree when it comes to family vacations.

The Simple Life alum, 42, revealed she and her husband of 14 years have completely different vacation styles — and so do their kids, daughter Harlow, 16, and son Sparrow, 14, while chatting exclusively with PEOPLE about her new partnership with ResortPass,

Richie says that while her “true idea of a vacation is a beach” destination, she’s usually not able to convince her whole family to make the trip.

“My daughter and I love the beach and my husband and son do not. It's very Madden. Maddens do not like the beach, but my daughter loves it,” she tells PEOPLE, adding that the Good Charlotte rocker and Sparrow are “more city people.”

Richie — who recently announced she has a new show coming out with best friend Paris Hilton — adds that laying in the sand is her favorite activity, but her husband is not a fan.

“My husband thinks it's disgusting that I will lay in the sand. I don't even need to have a towel. I just like to be there, I like to have the hot sand on me, jump in the water. That's my idea of my dream vacation.”

She says both her son and husband don't even like to “touch sand,” making family beach getaways even more of a struggle.

Despite their differences, Richie and Madden have been able to find a common ground with their kids.

“Because my daughter and I have the same travel style, we will go on vacations together,” she says, adding that they often make it a group trip with all their friends. “She has girlfriends and I'm friends with their moms and we'll do that. We did that over spring break, which was really nice. We took a big girls trip to Mexico.”

Meanwhile, her husband and son like to go on getaways that are more their speed.

“Their version of trips is going to — they both love baseball — so they will go to Maryland and watch an Orioles game,” she says.

As an avid traveler, the Nikki Fre$h star says partnering with ResortPass — a service that allows users to book “daycations” at hotel pools or even rooms — was a no-brainer for her.

“What I love so much about ResortPass is that it's so easy to use and it's something that, to me, feels like what everybody needs. You can look up any hotel and see locally where you can go and be a day guest,” she says.

Through the travel service's website or app, guests can search for a hotel and book a spot at the pool or spa just for the day. ResortPass has access to over a thousand luxury hotels and resorts, and day passes start at $25.

Richie adds that the idea of “day-guesting” is now an essential part of her routine.

“I think having these moments of self-care — a day where you can enjoy hotel amenities — it's just something that's really important in these busy times.”
