Fans think Inception 2 is coming after cryptic message drops online

Inception sequel hint

It’s been 14 years since Christopher Nolan’s beloved sci-fi released in cinemas.

Fans think that a sequel to Inception might be coming our way after a cryptic message featuring the iconic spinning top ‘totem’ dropped online.

The image was posted by Empire Magazine, with the words ‘COMING SOON..’ and people are, understandably, getting extremely excited.

The spinning top is famously used in the film as a totem – a unique object used to test if oneself is in one’s own reality and not in another person’s dream.

Director of the 2010 sci-fi Christopher Nolan has just come off the back of his Oscar-winning war epic Oppenheimer and is reportedly already writing his next film.

However, seeing as Nolan is famously secretive about his films up until the last possible moment, it’s pretty unlikely this announcement has anything to do with a sequel.

Instead, some fans have suggested it may be a cover interview with the director about his career to date, but that still hasn’t stopped fans losing their minds over a possible Inception follow-up.

If we’ve learned anything from the post, it’s that people really want to see a sequel to the 14-year-old sci-fi starring Leo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Elliot Page, Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy.

One commenter said: “Only an Inception sequel can save my year”, while another suggested a series adaptation could be in the works.

Another said: “A sequel to Inception (Inceptions?) would be INCREDIBLE news!”

However, some aren’t getting sucked into the hype, with one commenting: “Empire, you’re not fooling me again. Every time it just turns out to be a special retrospective or celebration issue of the magazine. Cool image, though.”

The good news at least is that, according to The Puck, the English filmmaker has already started work on his new film, also teasing that it would be “something not quite as bleak” as Oppenheimer.

“Part of me wants to leave the story behind,” Nolan told Yahoo Entertainment. “It’s great to be able to sit here and talk to you about the success of the movie. That’s a huge privilege.

“But the subject matter is very dark. It’s nihilistic. And, yeah, there’s part of me that’s quite keen to move on and maybe do something, you know, not quite as bleak.”

If you look at his recent filmography, it tends to follow a pattern over the last decade, switching between sci-fi and historical thriller (Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet, Oppenheimer).

This could give us a hint us towards sci-fi for his next project, which probably won’t quell the calls for Inception 2.

Nolan has also mentioned that he would love to direct a horror film, provided it was “a really exceptional idea”.

Speaking at an in-conversation event at at London’s British Film Institute in February, he said, “I think horror films are very interesting because they depend on very cinematic devices, it really is about a visceral response to things and so, at some point, I’d love to make a horror film.

“But I think a really good horror film requires a really exceptional idea. And those are few and far between.

“So I haven’t found a story that lends itself to that.”
