4. Marie Dies - The Bourne Supremacy

At the end of 2002’s The Bourne Identity, titular amnesiac spy Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) still doesn’t remember who he is, but has happily settled down with his girlfriend Marie (Franka Potente).

There’s just one problem - the Bourne movies are based on a series of books, which means there had to be a sequel.

The Bourne Supremacy, which released two years later, opens with Jason and Marie living it up in India.  Unfortunately, a bunch of Russian spies track them down after they are led to believe that Bourne was responsible for a crime some years earlier. The agent survives, but his good lady does not.

In a textbook case of fridging - when a female character is killed off to give her male lover something to fight for - Marie’s death comes completely out of nowhere and hangs a dark cloud over the rest of the film.

The first film ended with the two literally riding off into the sunset, yet viewers weren’t allowed to see more than five minutes of them enjoying life as a happy couple.

Worst of all, Marie doesn’t even die in the book! This was an entirely original idea!
