The city that bridges Europe and Asia hosted a brilliant convergence of international filmmaking talent recently. The 43rd Istanbul Film Festival rolled out the red carpet from April 17-28, 2024, celebrating the best in global cinema. Organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, this premier competitive event drew audiences and entries from around the world.

Diverse Slate of 51 Films Vied for Top Honors

A diverse slate of 51 movies from various countries competed across multiple categories at the festival. These included the prestigious International Competition, National Competition, along with dedicated competitions for short films, documentaries, and debut filmmakers.

When the final credits rolled, a range of thought-provoking works took home the grand prizes. The Golden Tulip for Best International Film went to Forever-Forever by Ukrainian director Anna Buryachkova. This poetic drama, co-produced with the Netherlands, explores the aftermath of conflict through the lens of a young woman’s life.

Turkish Cinema Shined on Home Turf

Turkey’s flourishing domestic film scene was also celebrated. Nehir Tuna’s Yurt (Dormitory) claimed the Golden Tulip for Best National Film, a nuanced look at university life. Best Director honors went to Selman Nacar for Tereddut Çizgisi (Wound of Hesitation).

Debut Turkish filmmaker Sinan Kesova made a splash, winning the Seyfi Teoman Prize for Best First Film with his historical epic Buyuk Kusatma (The Grand Siege). In the documentary realm, Dargecit  (Hold Still) by Berke Bas took top honors.

Renowned actors like Tulin Ozen and Alican Yucesoy also had their skilled performances recognised with best actress and actor prize.

International Critics Weighed In

The influential International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) presented three special awards. Their jury prize went to Ena Sendijarevic’s thought-provoking Sweet Dreams, a Dutch/French/Indonesian/Swedish co-production.

Turkish filmmaker Sirin Bahar Demirel received a special mention for her visually striking Zarafet ve Siddet Arasında (Between Delicate and Violent).

For two weeks, the ancient city’s streets, screens and halls were alive with the magic of storytelling from around the globe.
