Before embarking on this Fallout 4 quest, you will first need to have completed another one. The latter is “Detective in Peril” and she will ask you to free Nick Valentine. If you haven't done so yet, then start there!

At first he will be reluctant to tell you more, but if you can persuade him, he will become a little more talkative and tell you more about Dr. Crocker. Use your persuasive skills again to convince him to give you the key to the basement.
If you can't do it, don't panic! Indeed, you can bribe him for this key instead. Don't want to spend money? No worries either, you can steal this key from him or else simply pick the hatch leading to the basement.
Confrontation with Dr. Crocker
Arriving there, you will end your investigation into the disappearance of Earl Sterling, his remains lying near Dr. Crocker. A dialogue begins and you will have to succeed in persuade Dr. Crocker to surrender without violence or else to stop it.
At the end of this dialogue, the latter will commit suicide. If you want to kill it with your own hands, there is an option to kill it yourself. However, know that many of your companions will not appreciate that you resorted to violence in this situation.
