Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is getting a sequel, though it's not yet clear if Adam Wingard. A new film set in the Monsterverse is reportedly in the works following Godzilla x Kong's theatrical success with screenwriter Dave Callahm on board.

Per THR, Dave Callaham will write the upcoming sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. This marks a move to the Monsterverse from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Callaham was a co-writer for 2021's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. He'd also worked on the script for Ant-Man and co-wrote the hit animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. He also served as a co-writer for Wonder Woman 1984 with his other writing credits including The Expendables, Zombieland: Double Tap, and Mortal Kombat.

It remains unclear if director Adam Wingard will return after helming Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Reportedly, Legendary is keen on having Wingard return, but it may depend on the filmmaker's availability. Wingard is set to start work on his next movie, Onslaught, later this year. That could step in the way of having the director return for the next movie, though he has previously teased his desire to do a third film in the Monsterverse to cap off a trilogy.

"I definitely have some ideas of where they could go," Wingard told IGN, teasing that his desired sequel would put a heavier focus on Godzilla. "In the way that Kong is treated in this movie, if this movie is successful, I think that the next movie will be the Godzilla version of what we did with this movie, kind of pushing deeper into his story."

On what he saw next for Kong, Wingard added, "I think he is coming to his own as the king to a certain degree. He's not going to be a Skar King type of ruler, he's not a dictator of any kind. And so, to see how Kong will work with this group and how he himself will be a leader, I think it'll be very interesting, because I don't think it'll be straightforward."

The Monsterverse Will Continue Its Reign on the Big Screen

It's not a big surprise to see the Monsterverse continuing. Godzilla x Kong has grossed nearly $555 million at the box office, coming up fast upon the biggest haul for the franchise which was previously earned by Kong: Skull Island in 2017 at $568 million. Meanwhile, the franchise will also be further expanded upon on the small screen with a second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters in the works.
