BACOLOD City – The city government leaves to Burgos Market vendors the decision on whether to proceed with the proposed rehabilitation of the market or not.

Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez said he is giving the vendors a week, or until May 28, to decide following his dialogue with several of them, together with some city officials, on Monday, May 20.

The vendors visited his office at the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC) to air their concerns on the plan of the city to rehabilitate the market.

Benitez presented to them the proposed design of the Burgos Market and the vendors agreed to its redevelopment.

However, the vendors expressed worries like what will happen to them during the construction phase, adding they fear the possible loss of income.

Benitez assured them to find solutions to their concerns, saying the city government will look for a temporary space for the vendors just along the road beside the Burgos Market once the construction will commence.

“I gave them a week to get everything on board,” the mayor said. “Kay siling ko kon indi kamo kauyon, indi ko kamo pagpiliton. Kon indi kamo, isaylo ko lang sa iban nga lugar nga gusto magpatahum sang ila market.”

Burgos Market is one of the three major markets in the city. The two others are Central and Libertad markets.

Earlier this month, the City Engineer’s Office has submitted a proposed design for the Burgos Market. It could accommodate approximately 726 stalls across various sections including dry goods, vegetables, meat, fish, food court, as well as night market stalls.

The city government has allocated a P525-million budget for the rehabilitation of Burgos Market./PN
