On the red carpet, ‘Furiosa’ star Anya Taylor-Joy ‘Cannes’ do it all

Anya Taylor-Joy has been busy.

The 28-year-old Argentinian-English actress shot to stardom in 2020 after a Golden Globe-winning turn as chess prodigy Beth Harmon in the record-breaking limited series “The Queen’s Gambit.”

She has earned her stripes at the top of the call sheet working with directors like Edgar Wright (“Last Night in Soho”), done two turns as a witchy woman for Robert Eggers (“The Witch” and “The Northman”) and scored the buzziest cameo of the year in Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two.”

In her latest role, Taylor-Joy takes on the titular role in George Miller’s dystopian action thriller “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” The film is a prequel to 2015’s box-office smash “Mad Max: Fury Road,” in which Charlize Theron threw down the gauntlet portraying the Amazonian road warrior.

But let’s talk about the fashion.

In her style, Taylor-Joy finds yet another way to tell a story, with the assistance of stylist Ryan Hastings. She adores method-dressing, playful headpieces and ensembles that require a full-body commitment. On the other hand, the actress clearly loves a gorgeous gown as much as the next girl.

What follows is a crash course in Taylor-Joy’s recent red-carpet triumphs.

J’Adore Dior

In her coveted ambassadorial role for iconic French fashion house Dior, Taylor-Joy has worn a plethora of incredible — often custom — creations from the brand.

Following her aforementioned “Dune: Part Two” cameo, the actress attended the film’s world premiere in London this February alongside her comrades in this generation’s class of rising stars: Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh and Austin Butler. She chose a Bene Gesserit-approved veil over a plunging white gown for the occasion.

Presenting at the 2024 Oscars in March, she dipped into Dior’s rich archives for a custom re-creation of the iconic 1949 “Junon” dress — designed by Christian Dior himself. And appearing at the “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” red carpet at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in France, the actress looked like an old Hollywood starlet in embroidered beige tulle that played up her pale complexion to create an otherworldly effect.

The glamorous Dior dress was an outlier in Taylor-Joy’s no-brakes promotional tour for “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.”

We knew we were in for a wild ride when the actress showed up to the film’s Sydney premiere in an archival spring-summer 1996 couture look from the brand formerly known as Paco Rabanne. Replete with golden spikes and a warrior-like headdress, the arresting ensemble had fans concerned that the “Peaky Blinders” alum might need to forfeit sitting down for the sake of her pointed fashion statement.

At a Mexico City photo call, moreover, the leading lady channeled her inner motorcycle fiend in a leather set with dramatic shoulders from designer Robert Wun. For the film’s premiere in the same city, she put the pedal to the metal in a custom armor-esque Balmain mini dress with floral appliqués.

She brought the blossom motif back for the London premiere of “Furiosa,” where Taylor-Joy turned up the drama in spring-summer 2024 haute couture from Giambattista Valli. As is her wont, the platinum-haired star accessorized with Tiffany & Co., a brand for which she is also an ambassador.

The star of “Emma” brought easy-breezy chic to the 77th Cannes Film Festival in mid-May, clad in an ochre-hued bodycon dress from brand Atlein’s spring 2024 collection. Accessorizing with a gigantic Jacquemus hat, she cut a chic figure while declaring her arrival.

Taylor-Joy chose a second chapeau to accessorize a Jacquemus look at the aforementioned French festival, gracefully holding her train in one perfectly manicured hand while the straw bonnet hung down her back. A few days later, in yet another headpiece — this time a flapper-esque beaded cap, the actress showed her shredded abs in a shredded blazer-and-skirt combo from designer Jil Sander’s fall-winter 2024 collection.

Wherever this globe-trotting style icon pops up, Taylor-Joy continues to be one we love to watch on-screen and on the red carpet.
