Let’s talk about Overlord

Discussion

So how do I put it? Well I’ve been making an attempt to get into the franchise itself as so far I’ve seen one episode of the anime, and have had some experience with the novels starting with the first time.

Basically what I am trying to get at is that I am very new to the series in general, whether it’s the novel or anime series, and I wanted to see if anyone was into the show since this is an anime forum, so I figured that it would be appropriate to ask about the anime itself.

TLDR: Just wanted to encourage a simple chat on the Overlord series as to me, it seems like an interesting saga so far as it’s kind of sad at first, so basically I just wanted to know what I was getting myself into since I didn’t know if I was making a good choice by starting with it in the first place such as the aforementioned anime version.

Just watch it.

I can try watching it.

From this series I’ve read 12 novels, 3 volumes of the manga, all 4 seasons of the anime, and listened to the first 11 novels as audiobooks.

Watch it.

It was one of the first light novel series I'd read, and I used to like it quite a bit. However, nowadays, my feelings toward it are rather mixed. After writing volume 13, the author expressed his lack of interest in writing Overlord and decided to finish the series with volume 17 (18). His "I just want it to be over" attitude shows a lot in the next three volumes he wrote, and it diminishes my enjoyment of the series. I plan to read the final two volumes when they come out, but I expect them to leave a sour taste in my mouth.

Edited

And his stance of reasoning behind it is dumb too. https://www.reddit.com/r/LightNovels/comments/bsyot7/overlord_light_novel_author_kugane_maruyama/

He's essentially blaming others and simply said "I quit" and dipped, as if to find excuses to stop working on the series when this was simply an issue of bad publishers. I don't mind if they wanted to quit but the way he quit was just bad.

My Web/Light Novel journey started on SkyTheWood and I wouldn't have read Overlord if it wasn't for them. Bless Nigel for being a speed demon of a translator translating Overlord novels & anime fansubs.

Can’t chat about too much without spoiling it for you being that you just started.

I’ll say this, the show is worth watching, so keep going, but I’m disappointed by one thing…Sudden change of character by MC, mainly the actions he takes against otherwise harmless people.

Keep watching and let me know if you feel the same after you get through 3 seasons.

The MC doesn't change thats a misconception, he was evil from the very beginning

He really wasn't, at best he was acting neutral, doing moral good and showing mercy often because that was the best way to handle people at the time in a new environment. He just wanted to find other players and care for the NPCs in Nazarick, and on multiple occasions he was put off by how nonchalant they were about doing atrocities against humans and would guide them away from actually doing those things (if, perhaps, for no other reason than to not draw attention and ire to themselves). Until suddenly in S2 he's totally on board with eternal torment and torture on people who, need I remind, HE DELIBERATELY baited into doing what they did. Maybe his motivations didn't change, but his actions did, and it felt like his actions went from pragmatic to just indulging in the character of Ainz Ool Gown and as I recall the show never really brought attention to it.

Sort of, throughout the series there's a queue that shows if he doesn't act upon certain emotions and feelings his ability to feel them is removed / blocked.

By what it is unknown.

I believe the first queue is when Albedo gets thirsty and he suppresses the horny for her.

Because he is playing an undead any strong emotion is removed, also he doesn't feel lust because he has no pp.

I wonder if he'll ever realise he's the bad guy.

He's the same person since day 1 into the world.

The only difference is he no longer played safe knowing his power levels versus the world. He likes analyzing things which leads to him over thinking stuff.

That’s fine as I just wanted to know what I was getting myself into as sometimes I hear criticism about the show, but I really wanted to give it a chance.

It's one of the most interesting anime I've gotten into, I've seen heaps. Lately I find myself leaning more into shows like overlord where everything's not super predictable.

Makes me glad that I am not the only one who finds the show to be interesting so far as I like how the show starts off with the main character experiencing a state of loneliness.

It’s decent, probably one of the better isekais at the moment. It has the same power fantasy and harem tropes that most do, some will like that and some won’t, but I think Overlord manages it without being boring or repetitive. There are some mysteries and a larger picture that’s slowly unraveling as well, it’s not just some generic power-wank isekai. It has a lot of fun characters and I’ve enjoyed it so far overall.

I want to give it a chance, but some reviewers say the show suffers from bad pacing, so I don’t know what to do about the anime version to begin with.

If you care too much about pacing, just read the light novels as it's the author's intended pacing.

Thanks as I can stick with the books for now.

It does have pacing issues sometimes, but I’m someone who abhors bad pacing and I didn’t find it bad enough to put me off. To be honest, poor pacing is a bit of a prevalent issue in anime, I didn’t find Overlord to be more offensive than most others in that regard.

Then I am ok with watching the show as it seems like it could be a fun show to experience.

I'm actually watching it right now for the first time and am currently in the middle of season 2. All I can say after what I've seen so far is that it does hold up with the hype around it. I'm pretty much already hooked.

It's a dark fantasy isekai with game elements and an overpowered main character who is in charge of a flock of overpowered NPCs on a quest to conquer the world, if any of that seems like it would appeal to you then watch it, it's one of my favorite series, both the anime and LN are fine, the LN is superior obviously because of how much the anime leaves out, I'd say start with the anime and see what you think if you like it and wanna read it then you can decide that after a few seasons or after finishing the anime

Oh so the anime did leave out some important parts from the novels as I didn’t know that, but I can read the books first then.

Up to you, whichever you prefer, it is a good read, it's the only Light novel that I've read and caught up to lol.

I'm still astounded at the fact that people give ainz a pass, but will vehemently protest the very idea that mushoku Tensei is good over rudeus.

It gets boring after the first season.

Then I can just stick with the novels as that may help.

I absolutely love Overlord, the show imprinted on me one night when I was tripping on acid and the art style was just so beautiful and really popped. I woke up the next day to find out I'd watched the same episode for eight hours when I thought I'd been watching all of season two.

Man this show has beautiful artwork as I don’t know how the studio behind it made it look so good.

The characters are also really great and have a lot of depth to them. Sebas, the princess, Climb, Gazef Stronof, the show really brings all these side characters to life.

Man when I was tripping it just really, really like delved into my soul. Especially the intro song and the ending song, I was laying in my bed on a fucking journey thinking the same episode was a new one over and over 😂

Funny as I was looking back at the movie Scarface, so it’s kind of amusing to run into a LSD fan here, but I got nothing against you.

Anime and acid goes together like weed and food man, I've had some really almost like life altering experiences watching some more emotionally charged anime like Tokyo Ghoul while tripping.
