Eamonn Holmes pinpoints ‘very strange’ King Charles moment that left monarch with ‘nothing to say’

The 64-year-old was impressed by the portrait which was commissioned in 2020 to celebrate the then Prince of Wales’s 50 years as a member of The Drapers’ Company in 2022.

But the monarch’s reaction to its unveiling left Eamonn rather surprised.

Royal commentator Kinsey Schofield had heaped praise on the “beautiful” image, to which Eamonn responded: “He should tell his face that.”

“We have footage of him looking at it and he did not look very amused.

“He just had nothing to say about it, which I thought was very strange considering he had the artist there beside him.

“I must say, if I was getting a portrait done of myself, I would want something modern. This is modern, yet traditional.

“The face is traditional yet everything else is modern.”

Red is a prominent colour on the portrait, inspired by the uniform of the Welsh Guards.

British artist Jonathan Yeo said he felt the portrait should have more of a “dynamic and contemporary feel”.

Eamonn’s co-host, Isabel Webster, was also left impressed by the painting.

“I’ve never seen anything like that before”, she said.

“I think it’s great. It will look fantastic on some sort of gold wallpaper palatial wall. It’ll brighten the room no end.”

Speaking on the monarch’s reaction, Schofield said it was reflective of the King’s “self-deprecating” manner.

“I do think that his reaction was probably just trying to let the art speak for itself, which it certainly did”, she said.

“Art needs to have that. The magic of art is that if it’s good, people will debate it. That is exactly what is happening.”
