From that point, the story diverges significantly from the radio show and novels, which themselves are often contradictory so that’s all just business as usual for the franchise. The movie follows Arthur on a madcap adventure through space, running into an alien daredevil, a clinically depressed robot, and a rather nice girl he once met at a party in Islington. It’s a hilarious ride all the way through, with an ending that leaves room for more.

Its most indelible moments, outside of the closing minute, are those featuring a young Brad Pitt as a hitchhiking cowboy.
