A gruesome opening scene has been voted by fans on social media as the most shocking start to a horror movie in history.

Film lovers on the internet have been debating the opening scenes of popular horror films, in an attempt to agree on which one has the most spine-chilling start.

Of course, popular flicks like Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Halloween come to mind but fans have said that a little-known supernatural movie from 2002 called Ghost Ship claims the top spot.

The film follows the story of a marine salvage crew in the Bering Sea who find a mysterious ocean liner that disappeared in 1962.

The movie is directed by Steve Beck and stars Gabriel Byrne, Julianna Margulies, Ron Eldard, Desmond Harrington, Isaiah Washington, and Karl Urban.

Set in the 1960s, the film opens with a dance floor full of people onboard the deck of a ship, with a glamorous live singer serenading them.

The guests are having the time of their lives until a cable flies through the crowd, slicing straight through all the passengers.

In grisly scenes, everyone begins to fall to the floor as it becomes clear that they have all been dissected by the wire except for a little girl.

Many users have praised the stomach-curdling scene on social media as one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter): "Ghost Ship easily watched this opening weekend this scene was right off the bat to start the movie."

A second user shared a similar opinion, penning: "Ghost Ship is one of those movies where the first scene alone makes it worth a watch. The absolute carnage it immediately throws at the audience is insane."

A third said they love the opening of the horror flick because "its unexpected twist is insane," adding: "The combination of suspenseful music, a seemingly routine operation, and the sudden shocking event creates a memorable and gripping introduction to the movie."

"The unexpected nature of the scene tends to leave a lasting impression on viewers. I first watched it when I was 6 and it is still [embedded] in my brain!" they concluded.
